Mumbai – Fifth accused businessman Arshad Khan has been granted bail by the Sessions Court in the Ghatkopar hoarding accident case. The incident, which took place on 13 May 2024, killed 17 people. Khan was allegedly paid for mediation between the company Ego Media and Railway Police Commissioner Kaiser Kaiser Khalid (whose tenure was approved) to the owner of the hoarding. It was alleged that Rs 84 lakh was received. In January, the same court rejected Khan’s application.

Khan was a business partner of Khan Khalid’s wife and her name came up during interrogation of former Ego Media Director Janvi Marathe. Janhvi claimed that the company had given several vacant checks to Khan after Khalid’s approval in 2021-22.

According to the charge sheet filed by the crime branch, Khan had tried checks of his wife, brother -in -law, nephew and a neighbor’s bank accounts. In the bail plea, Khan claimed that he was not a beneficiary of this amount and the amount given by Ago Media was not his. Khan argued that different amounts shown in the bank statement were for different purposes, which had no connection with the hoarding incident.

Khan also argued that no Railway Police Commissioner is named in the case and he has been implicated due to political pressure. The Sessions Court had rejected the bail plea in January and said that Khan’s involvement in the alleged deal seems prima facie.
