A very strict step has been taken to maintain the sanctity and safety of the game in the Indian Premier League (IPL 2026). The IPL’s Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU) has issued a new and strict advisory for all the players and support staff participating in the current edition of the league.
Under this new guideline, the use of smart glasses, sunglasses and goggles equipped with communication and recording technology has been completely banned inside the restricted area of the stadium during match days. This warning has been issued mainly with the aim of eliminating the menace of spot fixing.
Why was the decision taken to ban smart eyeglasses?
According to a report in The Indian Express, ACSU had given an important input in this regard to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI):

Active Marketing of Companies: Many advanced technology companies are actively marketing and selling smart eyewear products (spectacles) to IPL players and team staff.

Threat of live-streaming and intelligence communication: According to sources, these smart devices are capable of live-streaming, sending and receiving text messages and making audio-video calls through mobile data or Wi-Fi network. Concerns had grown about the possible misuse of these devices for live betting or unauthorized communication during matches.

Classification under the rules: Under the minimum standards of the IPL Players and Match Officials Area (PMOA), these smart goggles are categorized as “Audio/Video Recording Devices” and “Communication Devices”.
Strict instructions: Heavy penalty will be imposed for violation
ACSU has made it clear that the possession or use of smart glasses or similar wearable technology inside the PMOA (dressing rooms, dugouts and restricted areas of the field) is strictly prohibited.
New protocol for players: Before entering the restricted zone on match days, players and support staff will have to compulsorily deposit their smart glasses, mobile phones and smart watches with the Security Liaison Officer. Failure to do so will be considered a direct violation of the PMOA protocol and strict penalties will be imposed under the operational rules of the IPL.
These 2 big controversies have come so far in IPL 2026
This is not the first case of breaking the rules regarding technology and inside the restricted area in the league. Two major disciplinary actions have already taken place in the current season (IPL 2026):
1. Fine imposed on manager of Rajasthan Royals
In the same season, Rajasthan Royals (RR) team manager Romi Bhinder was found using a mobile phone in the dugout during the match. This was a direct violation of PMOA rules, due to which he was fined Rs 1 lakh and given a strict warning for the future.
2. Disciplinary action on captain Riyan Parag
The league faced another major controversy when Rajasthan Royals captain Riyan Parag was caught on broadcast cameras using an e-cigarette (Vape) inside the dressing room during a match against Punjab Kings. For this behavior which insults the dignity of the game, BCCI fined him 25 percent of the match fee and also gave him one demerit point.
