Nobel laureate and economist Abhijit Banerjee, who has made India famous all over the world, and his wife Esther Duflo, who is also a Nobel laureate, have once again set out together on a big global mission. This husband-wife duo has been given a new and huge responsibility to find solutions to some of the world’s biggest problems.
A new and prestigious research center in Zurich, Switzerland, ‘Zurich Center for Economic Development Research’ Now the command will be taken by Abhijit Banerjee and Esther Duflo.
What is this project and why is it so special?
This is not a small project. This research center has received a huge funding of 32 million dollars (about Rs 266 crores), with the sole aim of finding solutions to the major challenges related to poverty, inequality and development around the world.
Abhijit Banerjee and Esther Duflo also received the Nobel Prize in Economics for this work. He showed the world some new and practical ways of poverty alleviation. Now this new center in Zurich will provide them a bigger platform to further their work.
This center will start its operations from July 2026 and Abhijit Banerjee and Esther Duflo will be its first directors.
What will this center do?
The center will bring together the best minds from around the world to explore which policies are most effective in reducing poverty and inequality. Abhijit Banerjee and Esther Duflo are known for their unique approach that uses small experiments on the ground to find out which schemes actually help the poor and which do not.
