The search for 152 people missing after the massive landslide in Wayanad, Kerala on July 30 is still on. So far 413 people have been injured in this tragedy. Search operations are going on in Mundakayil and Panchirimattom areas.
The rescue and relief operations in Wayanad were led by state tourism minister P.A. Mohammed Riyas, who said the search operation will end on Friday and a similar search operation will be conducted again on Sunday with the help of villagers as they are well acquainted with the area. Rescue operations are still underway after the accident. On Friday too, several teams conducted search operations in the areas around the Chaliyar river. So far, 78 bodies and more than 150 body parts have been recovered from here.
The Kerala High Court took cognizance of this
Meanwhile, Friday is an important day as the Kerala High Court has decided to register a suo motu case. The High Court has taken cognizance of media reports and letters which said that there has been uncontrolled exploitation of ecologically sensitive areas in Wayanad.
Experts' warnings were ignored
It is being told that experts on this subject have warned that such accidents can happen due to poor management at many places in the state. Even after getting clear indications of these minor accidents, the officials remained silent. It is alleged that many governments were formed in Kerala. But these governments never paid attention to the reports of big experts like Kasturirangan and Madhav Gadgil. Although Kerala has four state-run agencies to deal with environmental and climate change issues, no significant work has been done on this issue.
