Pankaj Udhas, the owner of a very humble nature, was born on 17 May 1951 in Charkhari Jaitpur village of Rajkot, Gujarat. He was the youngest of three brothers. His father's name was Kesu Bhai Udhas and mother's name was Jituben Udhas. His eldest brother was Manhar Udas, who achieved considerable success as a singer in Bollywood. His elder brother Nirmal Udhas was also a ghazal singer. Pankaj Udhas received his primary education from BPTI Bhavnagar. After this his family moved to Mumbai. He completed his higher education from St. Xavier's College, Mumbai and then chose music as his profession.
His family had a big contribution in becoming a ghazal singer. Ghazal singing was in his blood, for which he practiced a lot. A ghazal 'Chithi Aayi Hai Aye Hai Khatri Aye Hai' from the film 'Naam', released in 1986, made him a world famous ghazal singer. Similarly, a song 'Gya To Gya Kaise Bin Aap Ke' from the film 'Saajan' proved to be a milestone in his life. After this he reached the heights of fame.
Pankaj Udhas has always proved his worth among the audience and has mesmerized the audience with his melodious voice. He also received many awards like LS Gall Award in 1985. In 1988, he was awarded the Filmfare Award for Best Playback Singer. In 2003, he was honored with the IIFA Award by the Indian Film and Television Academy. In 2006 he was honored with the Padmashree award. In the year 2012 he was honored with Maharashtra Gaurav Award.
