Rain wreaks havoc in Sulawesi Island, landslides in gold mines, more than 10 people killed

Due to rain, a landslide occurred in an unauthorized gold mine. In which at least 11 people have died.

Rescue agency spokesman Afifuddin Ilahud said that on Sunday, July 7, about 33 villagers were digging for gold particles in a small traditional gold mine in remote Bon Bolango in Gorontalo province. At the same time, a huge amount of soil suddenly fell from the surrounding hills. Before the villagers could understand anything, they were buried under the soil.

Bodies of 11 people found

The spokesperson said that rescue workers reached the spot as soon as the information was received. Meanwhile, two injured people were rescued. On Monday, July 8, the bodies of 11 people were found. He said that rescue workers are still searching for 20 other people who are reported missing.

Rescue workers are facing difficulties due to rain

Hariyanto, head of the local rescue agency Basarnas, said the accident occurred in Sumawa district of Gorontalo province. He said that every effort is being made to evacuate people safely. 164 personnel, including national rescue teams, police and army personnel, have been deployed to search for the missing people. He also said that due to rain, there are a lot of difficulties in reaching the landslide site.

Illegal mining is common in Indonesia. Thousands of people earn their livelihood from this work. But during this time they have to work in dangerous conditions in which these people often get seriously injured or die.
