Meta removed 1.70 crore objectionable content in India in April | Live Updates, Unveiling the Latest India News Trends

According to Meta, the company that owns Facebook and Instagram, it removed 1.16 crore objectionable content under Facebook's 13 policies and 54 lakh under Instagram's 12 policies in April this year. In April, Facebook received 17,124 reports through its Indian complaint mechanism and in 9,977 cases it provided users with tools to resolve their issues. This includes pre-established channels to report content for specific violations, self-remediation flows where they can download their data, measures to resolve hacked account issues, etc. Meta disclosed these details in its monthly report on compliance with the IT (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code), Rules, 2021. Of the other 7,147 reports where special review was required, we analyzed the content as per our policies and acted on a total of 4,303 complaints. The remaining 2,844 complaints were reviewed but were not acted upon. On Instagram, the company received 12,924 reports through its Indian grievance mechanism.

According to Meta, in 5,941 cases we provided users with tools to resolve their issues. Of the other 6,983 reports that required special review, we acted on a total of 3,206 complaints through content analysis. The remaining 3,777 reports were reviewed but may not have been acted upon. Under the new IT Rules 2021, major digital and social media platforms with more than 5 million users will have to publish monthly compliance reports. Actions may include removing a piece of content from Facebook or Instagram, or covering photos/videos that may be upsetting to some users, Meta said.
