
Jammu: At least 21 people were killed and 47 injured when a bus carrying pilgrims skidded off the road and fell into a steep ravine in Jammu district, officials said in a statement.
Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor (LG) Manoj Sinha has expressed grief over the deaths in the accident.
The accident occurred at Tungi turn in the Choki Chora Belt area of the district and the bus fell into a 150-feet deep ravine, officials said in a statement.
According to a police spokesperson, 21 passengers were killed and 47 injured when the vehicle with registration number UP81CT-4058 fell into the valley at 12.35 pm.
The bus was carrying pilgrims from Kurukshetra in Haryana to Shiv Kori in Poni area of Reasi district in Jammu and Kashmir. The bus had started its journey from Uttar Pradesh.
According to a police spokesperson, the bodies have been shifted to Akhnoor sub-district hospital. Of the injured, seven are being treated at Akhnoor hospital and 40 at Jammu Government Medical College.
Officials said that initially all the injured were taken to Akhnoor Hospital. However, later 40 injured were taken to GMC Hospital in Jammu. Out of which the condition of six is said to be critical.
According to the injured passengers, the accident occurred when a car was coming from the front at full speed on a dangerous turn. Senior Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Faisal Qureshi, Transport Commissioner and other officials visited the spot and reviewed the rescue operation.
