A report by the Geneva-based Internal Displacement Monitoring Center (IDMC) has described Delhi as a hotspot for flood displacement. On July 9, 2023, the Yamuna river flooded, forcing people to evacuate their homes in several areas of Delhi, officials said. According to IDMC, about 27 thousand people were displaced during the Yamuna floods in 2023. On July 9, 2023, Delhi received 153 mm of rain within 24 hours. Which was the highest rainfall in a day in Delhi since 1982.

Natural disasters in Assam affected 20 districts and displaced around 91,000 people in June 2023, the IDMC report said. Apart from this, due to Biparjoy storm in the Arabian Sea in 2023, more than one lakh people were displaced in Gujarat and Rajasthan. The report said that in that year alone (in 2023) about 37 lakh people were displaced in South Asia. In 2018 this figure was 36 lakhs. According to IDMC researchers, 1.3 million people in Bangladesh were displaced due to Cyclone Mocha in South Asia in 2023.
