Three days of continuous heavy rain and lightning across Pakistan have left at least 49 people dead, officials said Monday, prompting authorities to declare a state of emergency in the country's southwest. 21 people have died due to heavy rains in the north-western Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province bordering Afghanistan. Heavy rain also occurred in the capital Islamabad and seven people died in the south-western province of Balochistan. Roads were flooded in the northwestern city of Peshawar and Balochistan's capital Quetta.

What did PM Sharif say?

On this natural disaster, the country's Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif said that he has ordered the officials to provide relief to the people. He said that the rain will improve the water resources of Pakistan. Pakistani environmental expert Raf Alam said that such heavy rain in April is unusual. He said that two years ago there was severe heat in Pakistan in March and April and now rains are being seen. He said that all this is due to climate change, due to which the country will have to face floods in the year 2022. In 2022, heavy rains caused rivers to swell and inundate one-third of Pakistan, killing 1,739 people and causing $30 billion in flood damage.

Heavy rain in Afghanistan also

Not only Pakistan but Afghanistan is also facing heavy rains and floods. According to the information, 33 people have died and 27 people have been injured in three days due to floods caused by seasonal rains in Afghanistan. More than 600 houses were destroyed while about 200 cattle were also killed. He said the floods also damaged large tracts of agricultural land and more than 85 km (53 miles) of roads. Authorities in Afghanistan provided assistance to about 23,000 families, and flash flooding was reported in 20 of the country's 34 provinces.
