A new and very interesting discussion has once again erupted in the corridors of Indian politics regarding the country’s highest civilian award ‘Bharat Ratna’. This time, on behalf of the country’s new young generation i.e. Gen-Z and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Rajya Sabha MP Vikramjit Singh Sahni, a strong demand has been raised to give the country’s highest honor ‘Bharat Ratna’ to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This issue came to light during the special program of ‘Mann Ki Baat’ photo exhibition organized in the capital New Delhi in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Lieutenant Governor of Delhi Taranjit Singh Sandhu. The BJP MP claimed that the young generation of the country feels that Prime Minister Modi’s leadership over the years has completely changed India’s global and domestic image, hence he is the most natural deserver of this prestigious honour.
The grand inauguration of ‘Mann Ki Baat’ – A Painting Exhibition organized in the capital Delhi was done by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. In this special exhibition, 76 excellent artworks created by famous artist Manjit Singh were displayed, in which Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 25 years of continuous selfless public service and leadership journey from becoming the Chief Minister of Gujarat to his tenure as the Prime Minister of the country were brought on canvas. During the event, Amit Shah honored artist Manjeet Singh and also watched a special short film based on the public service of the Prime Minister along with the guests present there. Praising the event on social media, Amit Shah said that ‘Mann Ki Baat’ is not just a radio program but has become the world’s largest live platform for nation building through public participation.
Addressing the media and gathering during the exhibition, Rajya Sabha MP Vikramjit Singh Sahni, who had earlier left the Aam Aadmi Party and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party, said that India’s young generation (Gen Z) wholeheartedly admires the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said that when he interacted with the youth and citizens of the new India, the youth directly demanded from Union Home Minister Amit Shah that PM Modi should be awarded ‘Bharat Ratna’ for his historic works. Vikramjit Sahni said, “Many former Prime Ministers of the country have received the Bharat Ratna award in the past, but the way Prime Minister Narendra Modi has changed the prestige of India in the whole world at a 360-degree angle, he is actually the real and strongest deserving of this honour”.
The history of conferring the highest civilian honor in India is rich. If we look back at the pages of history, till now 9 Prime Ministers of the country have been honored with ‘Bharat Ratna’. The first name among these is that of the country’s first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, who was given this honor during his tenure in the year 1955. After this, this highest honor was given to Lal Bahadur Shastri in 1966 (posthumously), to the country’s first woman Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1971, to Morarji Desai in 1991 and to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi (posthumously). Apart from this, Gulzarilal Nanda (1997), Atal Bihari Vajpayee (2015), Chaudhary Charan Singh (2024) and P.V. Narasimha Rao (2024) have also been awarded Bharat Ratna.
While this demand for ‘Bharat Ratna’ for Prime Minister Modi has intensified the political debate, it has also made it clear that the youth of the country feel deeply connected to his vision like Digital India, Startup Mission and Infrastructure Development. Although the final constitutional decision to award Bharat Ratna to any eminent personality is taken under the procedures laid down by the Central Government and Rashtrapati Bhavan, but this demand raised from the public platform in the presence of Home Minister Amit Shah has set a new agenda of political discussions for the coming days.
