There are chances of a big political battle breaking out once again in the country’s capital New Delhi. Rahul Gandhi, the main opposition party of India and the main leader of ‘India’ alliance, has made a strong appeal to the countrymen to be a part of the mega rally and ‘Chalo Delhi March’ to be held at the historic Ramlila Maidan in Delhi on November 1 with the slogan “Save Vote – Save the Country”. Making serious allegations against the Election Commission of rigging voter lists and vote theft, Rahul Gandhi has clearly said that when the public and political workers ask questions, police batons are used on them, but now there is no need to be afraid. Every citizen, farmer, laborer, student and businessman of the country will have to take to the streets to save our democratic forces. However, after the announcement of this big political event, the concerns of the business organizations of Delhi have increased a lot, because the possible blockade of roads and markets at the end of the festive season can have a direct impact on the business worth crores of rupees.
Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi shared an emotional and aggressive message on social media alleging that there has been a major attack on the electoral fairness of the country. He alleged that in the name of Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process, names of common voters have been illegally removed from the voter list. When questions are raised on this process and electoral fairness, the government and administration resort to police and lathicharge to suppress the voices of protest. Giving a message to the youth, women, farmers and businessmen of the country to unite, Rahul Gandhi said that this fight to protect democracy is not a fight for any one political party but for the rights of every citizen of the country. He has asked all the supporters to gather at Ramlila Maidan on November 1, where the opposition is going to organize the biggest ever protest rally against the central government and the Election Commission.
The ‘India’ Bloc, a coalition of opposition parties, has taken a strong stance on the role and impartiality of the Election Commission. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi have clearly demanded the removal of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar from his post or his resignation. The Congress leadership says that this mass movement is not going to stop until transparency of the election process and voter lists is ensured and strict steps are not taken against the guilty officials. The opposition also claims that irregularities have been found in lakhs of statutory forms and voter data in various states of the country, on which the government is trying to hide the truth instead of giving answers. The entire opposition is going to demonstrate its unity in Delhi on November 1 regarding this issue.
While on one hand the opposition is busy preparing to make the ‘Chalo Delhi March’ historic, on the other hand the traders and business associations of Delhi are under great tension regarding the date of this rally. Many big business organizations of Delhi including the Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI) have expressed their serious concern about this demonstration. Traders say that the first week of November is the time of the biggest festive season like Dhanteras and Diwali, when there is a huge trade of about Rs 25,000 crore in Delhi markets (like Connaught Place, Chandni Chowk, Karol Bagh etc.). If such a huge rally takes place at Ramlila Maidan on November 1, then common buyers will not be able to reach the markets due to barricading of major roads of the capital, route diversion and possible blockade of metro stations. CTI has estimated that due to this traffic jam, the traders of Delhi may have to face a business loss of about Rs 10,000 crore, hence they have appealed to the ‘India’ alliance to extend the date of this rally.
Responding to the concerns and appeals raised by Delhi traders, Rahul Gandhi expressed his sympathy towards the traders and targeted the government. He said, “To every businessman of Delhi: We love you and are listening to your concerns. The government itself has closed the metro, sealed the roads and locked the capital. But remember, when the very votes of the country are stolen, neither your shop, nor your savings, nor the future of your children will be safe.” Rahul Gandhi suggested the traders to ask Prime Minister Narendra Modi to remove Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar from the post, if this happens then this movement will end in just 30 seconds. Amidst this political rhetoric, now everyone’s eyes are on what form this new round of show of strength takes in Delhi on November 1.
