Karwa Chauth 2026 Thali Decoration: Give royal look to strainer, pot and clay karwa, decorate designer puja thali at home like this

On Karva Chauth, the most sacred festival of married women, the puja thali is the main attraction during the evening puja and offering Arghya to the moon. Ready-made thalis available in the market are often expensive and lack that personal touch. You can give a completely Rajasthani or royal look to the simple steel or brass plate, strainer, copper pot and traditional earthen karwa present at your home by decorating it with gota-patti, red velvet cloth, mirror and golden beads in just a few minutes.

Earthen Karva is considered the most sacred in the worship of Karva Chauth. While decorating it, it is best to use natural and auspicious colors:

  • Acrylic Base Paint: First wipe the clay curry with a clean cloth. After this, paint red, maroon or dark yellow colored acrylic on it. After the paint dries, make an auspicious symbol of Swastika or Om with golden color.

  • Gota and lace boundary: Paste fine gota-patti or golden bordered lace on the neck and lower circle of the karva with the help of fevicol or fabric glue.

  • Touch of Molly and Cowrie: Wrap the sacred Kalava (Mauli) on the face of the Karve. If you wish, you can also thread 2-3 small white cowries or small ghunghrus in it for auspiciousness, which gives it a vintage and traditional look.

While decorating the strainer used to see the moon and the husband, take care that nothing heavy should stick to the mesh part:

  • Velvet or satin fabric on rim: Stick a red velvet or satin ribbon around the outer rim of the strainer.

  • Hanging beads or pendant: Place a small beaded thread or a fine ghungroo pendant around the bottom circumference of the strainer. When you hold it in your hand, it will look very attractive.

  • Mirror and Stone Work: Place small round or triangle shaped craft mirrors (glass) and Kundan stones on the outer strip, so that it sparkles in the light of the evening lamp.

The combination of thali and lota should always be in the same color and theme so that the entire puja material looks as a beautiful set:

  1. Red Velvet and Gota-Patti Theme: Cut a red or maroon velvet cloth of the size of the plate and paste it inside the plate. Add wide golden gota-lace on the sides. Make four squares (quadrant) in the middle with Gota-Patti or give it the shape of Swastika.

  2. Mirror and Kundan Work Thali: Place small mirrors on the border of the plate and a string of pearls all around. Repeat the same pattern on the upper and lower parts of the water offering pot.

  3. Peacock or Traditional Floral Theme: Place a small artificial peacock feather or a red rose made of fabric on one corner of the thali, so that the thali does not become heavy and enough space is left to keep the puja items.

After decoration is complete, allow the glue to dry thoroughly. Leave a place in the middle of the plate to keep a four-sided lamp made of flour or brass. Keep bowls of Roli, Akshat, sandalwood and turmeric on one side. On the other hand, arrange fresh flowers, sweets, dry fruits, pot filled with water and sieve systematically, so that none of the ingredients remain unbalanced at the time of puja.
