The doctors of the prestigious King George Medical University (KGMU), Lucknow, known as the medical capital of Uttar Pradesh, have once again proved their extraordinary talent and medical skills. In another rare success in the field of medical science, KGMU experts have successfully removed a very dangerous and huge tumor growing in the jaw of a small three-year-old child. This case is not just the success of a surgery, but it is the victory of the hopes of that poor family which had lost after trying many big hospitals and cities of the country. By carrying out this complex and risky surgery, the doctors of KGMU have proved that the medical experts of the institute are proving to be a boon for the patients even in the most serious and incurable cases. He got injured while playing, this is how the serious story of the disease started. This whole matter started a few months ago from Hamirpur district of Uttar Pradesh. According to the victim’s family, their three-year-old innocent son was playing in the courtyard of the house as usual. While playing, he suddenly lost his balance and fell on the ground, due to which he suffered serious injuries on his face and jaw. Initially the family members thought that it was a normal injury which would heal with time. He got local dressing and did home remedies. But as time passed, a strange swelling started appearing on the child’s face. Gradually, instead of healing like a normal wound, this swelling started increasing continuously and soon the shape of the child’s right lower jaw started getting distorted. When the swelling became unbearable and the child started having difficulty in eating, drinking and breathing, the family took him to the district hospital of Hamirpur. After wandering in many cities, the family reached Lucknow KGMU. When the doctors of Hamirpur District Hospital saw the condition of the child and the rapidly growing unusual bulge in his jaw, they were shocked. The development of such a large tumor in the jaw of such a young child was beyond the scope of local treatment. The doctors immediately advised to take the child to a higher medical institution. After this began the painful struggle of a poor family. The parents kept visiting many different cities and private hospitals of Uttar Pradesh with the piece of their liver. Doctors everywhere gave up citing the young age and complexity of the tumor or cited the huge cost of treatment which the family could not afford. In this darkness of despair, when roads seemed closed from all sides, someone advised him to go to King George’s Medical University (KGMU), Lucknow. The family approached KGMU on October 21 with their last hope. The biggest medical challenge was to remove the huge 9×8.5 cm tumor. When the child was admitted to the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) of King George’s Medical University, the doctors started a thorough examination. The facts revealed in the initial clinical examination and modern tests like CT scan and MRI were shocking. Doctors found that a giant tumor measuring approximately 9 by 8.5 centimeters (9×8.5 cm) had developed in the right side of the child’s lower jaw. The presence of such a large tumor in proportion to the body of a thin and innocent three-year-old child was in itself an extremely rare and life-threatening situation. Due to the tumor, the child’s jaw was badly affected and his facial structure also started deteriorating. According to senior doctors at KGMU, a tumor of this size at such a young age could not only affect the child’s windpipe, but there was also a high risk of excessive bleeding during surgery. In such a situation, a concrete surgical strategy was prepared without any delay. The joint team of OMFS and Pediatric Surgery Department showed skill. Considering the seriousness of the matter, the KGMU administration immediately constituted a high-level medical board. On October 26, a special team of doctors was formed under the leadership of Dr. Hari Ram, Professor, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, to carry out this challenging surgery. In this surgery, Dr. J., Head of the Department of Pediatric Surgery, who has expertise in the field of pediatrics and surgery. D. Rawat and Dr. Anand Pandey also actively participated. This joint effort of senior and young doctors from both the departments became a great example of teamwork in the medical world. As senior residents in the surgical team, Dr. Poonam, Dr. Bhavana and Dr. Apeksha assumed important responsibilities, while junior residents Dr. Abhinav, Dr. Anika and Dr. Shafiq provided all possible medical support during the operation. During this extremely delicate and complex surgery that lasted for hours, the doctors demonstrated their fine art and completely removed the 9 cm terrible tumor from the child’s jaw while saving healthy tissues. Important role of anesthesia and ICU team, condition of child patient is stable. In any major surgery, as much importance as the surgeon has, the contribution of the anesthesia team is also considered to be equally big. Performing such a major surgery on a three-year-old child was no less than an ordeal even for the anesthesiologists. During the entire process, the anesthesia team was led by Professor Dr. Prem Raj, along with Dr. Deepali, Dr. Anushka and Dr. Angel, who very cautiously controlled the blood pressure and oxygen levels in the child’s body. Skilled paramedical staff like Maya Rajput, Ramdev, Nand Lal, Rakesh and Arvind also cooperated with full dedication in the operation theatre. Immediately after the successful surgery, the patient was shifted to the ICU of the Pediatrics department to avoid any infection or post-operative complications. Presently the child is being looked after under the strict supervision of pediatrician Dr. Neeraj Anand. According to the doctors of the hospital, the child is recovering rapidly and his condition remains completely stable. Symptoms of jaw tumor in children and important medical advice for parents. This successful incident has once again forced us to think that physical irregularities and injuries in children should never be taken lightly. Often children fall while playing and parents ignore it considering it to be a simple swelling, which can later take the form of serious diseases. Jaw tumors or cysts initially manifest as normal swelling or pain, but if the swelling persists for more than a few weeks and continues to increase in size, a qualified maxillofacial surgeon or pediatric dentist should be immediately consulted. This historic success of KGMU has once again proved the capability of government medical institutions of Uttar Pradesh. KGMU is emerging as a strong ray of hope for the poor and helpless patients, where with the help of state-of-the-art technology and experienced doctors, even complex surgeries that seem impossible are being performed with complete success.
