Is new Rs 1,000 note really coming in the market again?

Since the demonetization of 2016, various kinds of rumors and claims often go viral on social media regarding the Indian currency and market. These days, the news is once again floating on the internet and messaging platforms that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is going to re-release new Rs 1,000 notes in the market very soon. Pictures and videos of a new yellow designed Rs 1,000 note are being shared on social media, which are also being claimed to be a picture of an ancient temple. After such misleading messages go viral, it is natural that the question arises in the minds of the general public whether the government is really going to introduce Rs 1000 note again or is it just another fake rumour? Let us know what is the real truth of this viral claim and what statement has been issued by the official agency of the government on this.

#1 Truth behind the claims of Rs 1,000 note going viral on social media

When the news about the withdrawal of new Rs 1,000 notes started spreading like wildfire on social media, the official Fact Check Unit (PIB Fact Check) of the Central Government took strict cognizance of the matter. The Press Information Bureau warned the people of the country in clear words that all the news related to the arrival of new Rs 1,000 note in the market is completely false, fabricated and baseless. No such official decision or announcement has been made by the RBI or the Finance Ministry. The pictures and videos being shared on the internet are either morphed (edited) or are imaginary creations created with the help of AI. The government has made it clear that at present there is no proposal under consideration to print or put into circulation any new note of Rs 1,000.

#Old note of Rs 1,000 was discontinued on 1 November 2016, know the history

It is noteworthy that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced historic demonetization in the country on November 8, 2016, under which the old Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes of Mahatma Gandhi series were stopped as legal tender overnight. During that time, this step was taken to curb black money and end the business of fake notes. After the demonetization of Rs 1,000, the government had launched a new note of Rs 2,000 and a new design of Rs 500 in the market. However, later in May 2023, RBI also started gradually withdrawing Rs 2,000 notes from circulation. Since then, no new changes have been made by the Central Bank regarding high value notes.

#1 There is a strong need to beware of fake and misleading financial news

In today’s digital age, many times false news is spread with the help of old or fake documents to get views and likes on platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, YouTube and Instagram. In matters related to currency notes, tax rules or government schemes, such rumors create unnecessary confusion in the economy. It is repeatedly appealed by the government that until any official information is released on the official website of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) or the Finance Ministry, do not blindly trust any viral message nor share it further. If you also receive such a suspicious message, you can check its authenticity through the official channels of PIB Fact Check.
