What is the history of ‘Do Sau Kholi’, where gangster Lawrence Bishnoi is confined?

Whenever the name of Sabarmati Central Jail located in Ahmedabad, Gujarat comes up, many pages of history and crime world open simultaneously. There is a high-security and mysterious place within this jail complex, which is known as ‘Dosow Kholi’ in the world of crime and the police department. At present, India’s most famous and dangerous gangster Lawrence Bishnoi is kept under tight security in this ‘Do Sau Kholi’. After being named in Baba Siddiqui murder case, firing at Salman Khan’s house and many high-profile incidents, the security of this special cell has been made an impenetrable fort. But ‘Do Sau Kholi’ is not only in the news because of Lawrence Bishnoi, but its history is also deeply linked to the country’s most notorious criminals, underworld don Dawood Ibrahim and self-styled godman Asaram Bapu.

‘Do Sau Kholi’ located inside Sabarmati Jail is actually a special complex of 200 small dungeons (High-Security Isolation Cells), which was designed during the British era to keep very dangerous prisoners separate from the main jail population and in complete isolation. The structure of this block is such that the prisoner confined here can neither talk to any other prisoner nor does he have any idea of the outside world. Each cell has heavy iron doors, double bars and round-the-clock surveillance by CCTV cameras. During the independence movement, the British used this barrack to torture many freedom fighters and keep them away from the mainstream, but after independence, it was dedicated to keeping the most dreaded and high-risk criminals of the state.

The criminal history of ‘Do Sau Kholi’ has been extremely sensational. In the 1980s, when Mumbai’s underworld kingpin Dawood Ibrahim was spreading his illegal business through Gujarat and was arrested, he too was kept under strict security in the ‘Do Sau Kholi’ of the same Sabarmati jail. Apart from Dawood, Gujarat’s local don Abdul Latif also had to spend his days behind the bars of this block. At the same time, Asaram Bapu, who was serving life imprisonment in a sexual assault case, was also kept in this isolated jail complex of ‘Do Sau Kholi’ for a long time in view of the security and sensitive situation. The main accused in the 2008 Ahmedabad serial bomb blasts were also lodged in this barrack under tight security, after which this cell came into the limelight at the national level.

At present, the identity of this ‘Do Sau Kholi’ has become the main hideout of Lawrence Bishnoi. Under the special order of the Home Ministry (Section 268 of CrPC / BNSS), the transfer of Lawrence Bishnoi is banned, due to which he is not being sent to the jail of any other state. A three-tier impenetrable security cordon of Gujarat Police, National Investigation Agency (NIA) and Central Paramilitary Forces (CRPF) has been prepared to keep Lawrence Bishnoi in ‘Do Sau Kholi’. Outside Bishnoi’s cell, 24-hour commandos, surveillance rooms equipped with night-vision cameras and body-warming cameras are used. Even before serving food to him, the food is security checked, so that there cannot be any kind of attack on him or exchange of secret messages from inside or outside the jail.

With time, the Sabarmati Jail administration has completely transformed ‘Do Sau Kholi’ into a hi-tech and digital security zone. Now the jammer technology in this complex has been so upgraded that no illegal mobile network or 5G signal can work. With the help of AI based facial recognition and motion sensor cameras, every activity around the cell is monitored directly from the command center. This history of ‘Do Sau Kholi’ and its impenetrable security proves that this particular block of Sabarmati is considered to be the strongest and most secure citadel that the Indian prison administration has to keep the most notorious criminals in complete isolation and control.
