Once again the political battle between Delhi versus the states has heated up in the politics of South India. Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has made a big political call by directly attacking the functioning of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government at the Center and the Election Commission. The Chief Minister alleged that the Central Government is attacking the constitutional rights of the weaker sections of the society and the poor by misusing the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists. While interacting with the media in Hyderabad, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy appealed to the Congress workers and common citizens of Telangana to participate in large numbers in the huge mega rally of the opposition alliance ‘INDIA’ to be held at the historic Ramlila Maidan in the national capital Delhi on November 1 to protect their democratic rights. The Chief Minister set a target that at least 10 to 15 thousand people from Telangana would march to Delhi to send a strong and decisive message against the policies of the Central Government and the alleged misuse of the Election Commission.
According to the official statement and press conference issued by the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), Revanth Reddy made extremely serious allegations against the Central Government. He said that under the guise of Special Intensive Revision, the names of those people who stand at the lowest rung of the society and raise their voice against the anti-people policies of the Center are being systematically deleted from the voter list. Directly targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Chief Minister said that the Central Government is conspiring to weaken the voting rights of the poor, the deprived and the minorities by arbitrarily using this administrative process. He said that on one hand, Prime Minister Modi’s administration is affecting the autonomy of institutions, while on the other hand, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is continuously fighting from the streets to the Parliament to save the country’s Constitution, democracy and the basic rights of the poor. Reddy stressed that any kind of robbery on voting rights will not be tolerated and the people of Telangana will remain at the forefront of this constitutional fight.
Along with this strong stance of the Telangana Chief Minister, All India Congress Committee (AICC) General Secretary (Organization) KC Venugopal shared complete details of the outline and preparations for the opposition alliance’s mega rally to be held at Ramlila Maidan in Delhi on November 1. Speaking to reporters in the national capital, Venugopal said that the country’s democracy and election process are currently going through the most delicate phase. He raised serious questions on the alleged blatant interference of the Central Government in the functioning of the Election Commission of India. The Congress General Secretary alleged that an autonomous constitutional body like the Election Commission today appears to be forced to work under the pressure of the ruling party, due to which the impartiality of voter lists in the states has become completely doubtful. He clarified that this movement of November 1 will not be just an ordinary political rally, but it will prove to be the beginning of a historic mass movement to protect the country’s Constitution, independence of autonomous institutions and the right to vote of every citizen.
Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has directed the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) and all leading organizations of the party to ensure comprehensive preparations at the grassroots level for the Delhi visit. He said that block level officials, youth workers and civil society representatives from all the districts of the state including Hyderabad, Warangal, Khammam, Karimnagar and Nizamabad will reach Delhi through special trains and vehicles. Political analysts believe that this aggressive stance of Revanth Reddy is a deliberate strategy to underline the influence of South India in national politics and to register strong participation of Telangana on the platform of opposition alliance. By directly linking the issue of deletion of names from the voter list to the rights of the poor, Congress has created a sensitive emotional and constitutional debate, due to which the conflict between the Center and the Opposition is likely to become more intense in the coming days.
The constituent parties of the opposition alliance ‘INDIA’ believe that it is necessary to conduct an impartial investigation into the complaints of fraud in voter lists, missing names of genuine voters and administrative arbitrariness that have come to light from many states in recent times. Through the rally at Ramlila Maidan, the opposition is preparing to create such an environment in the entire country that the transparency of the electoral processes should not be affected. The questions raised by Revanth Reddy and KC Venugopal have given a new twist to the national debate. The opposition claims that if the confidence of the general public in the functioning of the Election Commission and the revision of voter lists is shaken, it will be fatal for the entire democratic structure. This huge crowd gathering in Delhi on November 1 will become the biggest center of the opposition’s joint show of strength against the central government, where prominent opposition leaders from across the country will demand electoral fairness and constitutional accountability in one voice.
