NEET UG Counseling 2026: Big news for students looking to become doctors

Amidst the long and tiring process going on for admission in medical and dental colleges across the country, a very shocking figure has come to light. Every year lakhs of students work day and night to pass the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test i.e. NEET. Parents risk their hard-earned money to fulfill their children’s dream of becoming doctors. But despite this, when the final stages of counseling are completed, the results that emerge are surprising. This year too, even after passing all the rounds and main stages of NEET UG counselling, hundreds of seats in medical and dental courses remain vacant. This situation raises a new hope as well as many serious questions for those youth who could not get admission till now due to low marks or other reasons.

The ‘Stray Vacancy Round’ conducted by the Medical Counseling Committee i.e. MCC is generally considered to be the final and decisive stage of the admission process. This year also MCC had organized the Stray Vacancy round to fill thousands of vacant seats for MBBS, BDS and B.Sc Nursing. A total of 4,068 seats were identified for this special round, which were to be allotted among the qualified candidates. However, when the provisional seat allotment result of this round was released, it was seen that despite all the efforts, only 3,108 seats could be allotted to the students. Even after this, more than 800 seats were left in various medical institutions across the country, on which no one took admission. That such a large number of seats remain vacant even after so many rounds of counselling, forces one to wonder what are the practical obstacles that students and their families are facing in the process.

Experts and education experts believe that there are many major reasons responsible for medical seats remaining vacant. The biggest and most important reason is the huge fee structure of some private and deemed universities of the country. Many times, in the final stages of counselling, those seats are left whose tuition fees are far beyond the budget of common families. Apart from this, geographical distance, location of the college and special choice of students regarding the course also play a big role in this. Many students take the risk of giving up admission if they do not get a seat in the city or college of their choice. However, for those students who had good ranks but were not able to do proper choice-filling in the initial rounds, these vacant seats are like a big opportunity. During the counseling process, many times due to technical reasons or delay in verification of documents, eligible candidates are not able to secure seats on time.

As soon as the figures of vacant seats after the Stray Vacancy round have become public, the heartbeats of medical aspirants across the country have increased. Now the most prominent question in the minds of students and their parents is whether any new or special stray vacancy round will be organized to fill these remaining more than 800 seats? Education experts indicate that to avoid wasting the vacant seats, the concerned authorities and counseling agencies at the state level may conduct additional sessions or special rounds. However, no official and final announcement has been made yet by the Medical Counseling Committee (MCC) in this regard. Experts recommend that candidates who have not got the desired college in the previous stages or who are in a position to wait a little longer, should keep a close eye on the official website of MCC.

If you are also among those candidates who are in the race for medical admission this year, then you need to be extremely cautious. A little carelessness at these last stages of counseling can take away the opportunity of a year’s hard work from your hands. Students who have been provisionally allotted seats in the previous results should be fully prepared with all their required documents like NEET scorecard, admit card, 12th mark sheet and category certificate within the time limit. Also, if a new or special round is conducted, great care will need to be taken while choice-filling. Take the final decision only after assessing the college fees, the arrangements there and your financial situation. The cost of each seat in the medical education structure of the country is very high, hence it is necessary that the rights of the qualified and hardworking youth of the country on these vacant seats can be decided as soon as possible.
