Indian Postal Department (India Post) operates the cheapest, accessible and reliable delivery network in every corner of the country. Be it students sending their important documents, businessmen selling their products or common citizens sending gifts and goods to their families, millions of people rely on speed post, registered post and parcel services every day. But many times, while carrying a parcel, the goods get lost on the way, the goods get stolen from the parcel (pilferage) or the box gets badly crushed and the valuables inside it get broken. In such a situation, the biggest doubt in the minds of consumers is whether the postal department gives compensation? If so, is the entire item priced or only a nominal amount? Under Indian Postal Rules and Post Office Act, the rules for compensation for uninsured and insured parcels are completely different, which is mandatory for every customer to understand.
As per the official policy of the Indian Postal Department, if you have sent an item through a normal (uninsured) Speed Post or Domestic Parcel and it gets lost, stolen or arrives damaged in transit, the Postal Department does not compensate the actual value of the item.
In this situation the direct government formula for calculating compensation applies:
-
Compensation for Uninsured Speed Post: Double the Speed Post Charges paid by you or a maximum ₹1,000whichever is less.
-
Understand with example: If you paid speed post fee of ₹80 and the parcel is lost, you will get a refund of ₹160 (double). At the same time, if you had paid a postage fee of ₹ 700 for a heavy parcel, then double it becomes ₹ 1,400, but since the maximum limit (Cap) is ₹ 1,000, you will be given compensation of only ₹ 1,000.
-
In case of excessive delivery delay: If the parcel is not lost or broken but has been delayed much more than the scheduled time, the department only refunds the Speed Post Charges paid by you.
-
Registered Parcel: Under the Postal Department rules, a maximum token compensation amount of ₹ 100 to ₹ 250 is prescribed for loss of a normal registered article.
This is why the Postal Department always warns that if you are sending a mobile phone, laptop, expensive clothes, watches or jewellery, then you must get its postal insurance done while booking the parcel. Many people write on the parcel box that “Mobile phone, value ₹ 25,000”, but merely writing on the box does not make the item considered insured. For this, a nominal additional insurance charge has to be paid over the counter.
If your parcel is duly insured, the rules change completely in case of loss:
-
In case of total loss of luggage: The Postal Department pays the entire amount for the insured value (Insured Value) after completion of investigation.
-
In case of partial damage or breakage: If the goods inside the parcel are damaged, compensation is decided within the sum insured based on the actual assessment of damage.
-
Maximum limit: The maximum limit of insurance cover on Speed Post parcel has been increased to ₹ 5 lakh, provided you have a valid purchase bill or invoice for the goods.
Post Office rules also stipulate certain conditions where no compensation is given for loss of parcel:
-
Incorrect or incomplete address: If the sender had written wrong address, wrong pin code or incomplete mobile number on the parcel due to which the delivery could not be done.
-
Poor or weak packing: If the customer has packed glass, ceramic or fragile electronic items in an ordinary envelope/box without bubble wrap or thermocol and it breaks due to pressure, it is considered negligence on the part of the customer.
-
Natural Disasters (Force Majeure): Flood, earthquake, train accident, riots, cyclone or such unexpected events which are beyond the control of the Postal Department.
-
Banned Content: Sending explosives, inflammable substances, liquids, acids or illegal items in the parcel will not only result in claim rejection but can also lead to legal action.
If your parcel is lost in transit or is received by the recipient in a damaged condition, follow this procedure to get compensation:

In many cases, consumer courts have ordered the Postal Department to pay the full cost of the goods as well as huge compensation for mental torture after finding gross deficiency in service of the Postal Department. To avoid loss in future, make sure to get insurance for a nominal fee while sending any valuable parcel.
