Once again there has been a tremendous international uproar in British politics regarding the historic referendum. Britain’s new Prime Minister Andy Burnham has made a big and sensational claim alleging that Russia had directly interfered in the historic Brexit referendum held in 2016. This statement regarding the decision to separate from the European Union has sparked heated debate in diplomatic circles from London to Moscow. However, Prime Minister Burnham has not made public any concrete documents or evidence to support his serious claim, nor has he clarified through which technique or strategy Russia tried to influence the vote. Along with this, he has also warned the citizens and voters of Germany and France to be completely alert about foreign interference and cyber disinformation in their democratic processes.
The Russian Embassy in London has given a very strong and sharp response to these statements of the British Prime Minister. Moscow has rejected all these claims as completely baseless and fabricated. The official response issued by the Russian Embassy said that Britain has long been suffering from anti-Russian hysteria and has always tried to blame others for its internal political failures and administrative failures. Russia has clearly stated that it has no intention of influencing the internal politics or elections of democratic countries, while Western countries keep making such irresponsible allegations again and again without any concrete evidence.
In view of the controversy that arose after this statement of the Prime Minister, the ministers of the British government have started trying to control the situation. Stephen Doughty, Minister of State for the Cabinet Office and Foreign Affairs, clarified on the matter, saying that while there may have been sporadic attempts at disinformation by foreign powers or Russia, they completely failed to influence the final outcome of the referendum in any way. The British government insisted that the 2016 Brexit mandate was entirely legitimate, democratic and reflected the sovereign will of the British people. This statement of the government confirms that no question mark can be raised on the fairness of the referendum and its constitutional validity.
In the historic referendum held in 2016, 52 percent of British voters voted in favor of Brexit, which completely changed the political and economic direction of modern Europe. Earlier, former Prime Minister Boris Johnson had also clearly said in the year 2020 that no concrete evidence has been found of any kind of Russian interference in the referendum. Apart from this, in the year 2020, a detailed intelligence report released by the British Intelligence and Security Committee also revealed that the government and investigative agencies failed to prove that Russia had actually influenced Brexit. Although that report did mention other past political developments and indications of attempts at foreign interference in public opinion processes, its direct impact on the Brexit decision could not be proven.
