Amidst the fluctuations in international crude oil prices and daily review of domestic oil companies, new prices of petrol and diesel have been released in the hilly and plain districts of Uttarakhand. According to the data released by oil marketing companies (OMCs) at 6 am, prices are relatively stable in the plains of the state, while some variation is being seen in the marginal and high Himalayan districts due to transportation costs. It is important for drivers traveling on Chardham Yatra routes and hilly routes to know the oil prices before starting their journey.
In Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand, the price of petrol is being recorded around Rs 99.54 to Rs 100.50 per liter and diesel around Rs 95.90 per liter. Due to nearby depots and easy transportation system, fuel rates in metropolitan Haridwar and Terai region Udham Singh Nagar remain slightly lower than other parts of the state, where petrol prices are around Rs 99.62 per litre.
In Nainital, the beautiful tourist city of Kumaon division, the price of petrol is stable around Rs 99.66 to Rs 100.16 per liter and diesel around Rs 95.20 per liter. At the same time, drivers on the highways passing through the plains and Terai areas are getting minor relief.
In the highland districts of Garhwal and Kumaon in the hill state of Uttarakhand—such as Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Uttarkashi, Almora, Bageshwar and Pithoragarh—petrol and diesel prices are higher than in the plains cities. In districts like Pithoragarh, Bageshwar and Chamoli, petrol rates reach Rs 101.40 to Rs 101.90 per liter and diesel around Rs 96.60 to Rs 97.10 per liter.
The main reason for this is the local geographical condition and complex transportation. Oil is transported through tankers from oil refineries or main plain depots (such as Roorkee or Bareilly) through narrow and winding mountain paths. Due to long distances and hill climbing, freight charges increase significantly. Apart from this, due to local dealer commission and state tax structure, the consumer has to pay one to two rupees more per liter.
