Russia’s massive missile attack on Kiev: 12 people killed and dozens injured, blasts echoed throughout the night

The ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia once again seems to be taking a very bloody form. In the early hours of Thursday, August 20, Russia carried out one of the deadliest missile attacks ever on Ukraine’s capital Kiev. According to local emergency services and administrative officials, at least 12 people have died tragically in these attacks, while more than 33 people are said to be seriously injured. Throughout the night, echoes of explosions were heard in the capital Kiev and air raid sirens continued to sound throughout the city till morning.

Residential areas were targeted in many districts

Russian forces primarily targeted Kiev’s key districts—Darnytskyi, Svyatoshynskyi, and Solomyanskyi. Missiles fell at at least 12 different places in these areas, causing huge devastation. Several multi-storey residential buildings, a medical center and an educational institution have been badly damaged in the attacks.

A nine-storey residential building in the Solomiansky district was hit directly, reducing the top two floors to rubble and causing massive fire in the rest of the building. Apart from this, people were also trapped in two other residential buildings and a school shelter, rescue operations are being carried out to rescue them.

Russia is increasing pressure on air defense system

Defense experts believe that Russia has been continuously intensifying ballistic missile attacks on Kiev for some time. The main strategy behind this is to put heavy pressure on Ukraine’s air defense system and destroy the limited missile reserves it has.

On the other hand, there is a lot of activity on the international diplomacy front as well. Earlier, US President Donald Trump had hinted at allowing Ukraine to obtain a license for the production of ‘Patriot’ air defense system, but this decision was later reversed, which has dealt a major blow to Ukraine’s defense preparedness. At present, the Kiev administration is engaged in relief and rescue operations and the injured are being treated in hospitals.
