Purnima Tithi has special spiritual and religious significance in Hinduism and Vedic calendar. On the day of full moon, the moon is in its full state and with all the 16 arts, showers its nectar-filled rays on the earth. According to mythological beliefs, on Purnima Tithi, Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, herself comes to Bhooloka (earth) to remove the sufferings of her devotees and to know their condition. On this day, there is also a special tradition of listening to the story of ‘Satyanarayan’ form of Lord Shri Hari Vishnu.
Usually, there are 12 Purnima Tithis in a year, but in the year 2026, due to extra month in the month of Jyeshtha (month of Laund), the number of Purnima fasts has increased to 13. Earlier, due to Adhik Maas, a fast has been observed on the full moon day of Jyeshtha Adhik Maas on 31st May 2026. Presently, the Shukla Paksha of Shuddha (Main) Jyeshtha month is going on, which will end with the Mahavrat of the upcoming ‘Jyeshtha Purnima’.
On this auspicious date, bathing in holy rivers, charity and worship of banyan tree is done. On this day, married women also observe Vat Savitri Purnima fast for the long life and continued good fortune of their husbands.
