The race to become an IAS-IPS was very exciting! So many thousand contenders for one seat, know what will happen next after prelims

At present, the heartbeats of lakhs of youth have increased due to the Civil Services Examination, which is considered to be the most prestigious and difficult in the country. The results of the Civil Services Preliminary Examination 2026 to be conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) can be declared any moment now. This year too, lakhs of meritorious candidates from across the country have tried their luck in the race to become a part of the administrative structure of the country, i.e. IAS, IPS and IFS officers. Now the competition has started among the candidates appearing for the exam from Mukherjee Nagar and Karol Bagh in Delhi to the examination centers spread in every corner of the country as to what the cut-off is going to be this time and how tough the competition is to get each seat.

There is a huge competition between how many thousands of candidates for one seat.

The mathematics of UPSC Civil Services Examination is always shocking. This year, the number of candidates applying against the total vacancies released by the Commission has reached a record level. Analysis of the data shows that in terms of the number of candidates appearing in the preliminary examination, this time more than a thousand contenders are standing in the queue for one seat. However, the main competition is between those serious students who prepare day and night by staying in big educational hubs like Delhi, Prayagraj, Jaipur and Patna throughout the year. Due to the difficult and unpredictable pattern of the Prelims exam, this time too the selection percentage is expected to be very tight, which makes this race more challenging.

What will be the next step for the lucky candidates who clear the Prelims exam?

In this three-stage selection process of UPSC, the preliminary exam is only a screening test, that is, its marks are not added to the final merit list. After the declaration of the Prelims result, the candidates who will cross the cut-off marks decided by the Commission will get a golden opportunity to appear in the main examination i.e. UPSC Mains 2026. The Mains exam is completely descriptive, consisting of a total of 9 written papers. As soon as the results of Prelims are declared, successful candidates will have to start rigorous practice and answer writing without wasting any time, because the main examination plays the biggest role in determining the real merit.

Detailed Application Form (DAF) has to be filled for Mains Exam.

The next most important administrative step for all the candidates who have cleared the preliminary examination will be to fill the ‘Detail Application Form’ i.e. DAF-1. UPSC will make this form available for the students found eligible for Mains exam on its official website. In this form, candidates have to give complete and accurate information about their educational qualification, family background, hobbies and their personal preferences. Experts believe that DAF should be filled very carefully, because during the future final stage i.e. Interview (Personality Test), most of the questions are asked on the basis of the information given in this form.

New challenges for students in the digital and AI-driven era

In this era of modern Generative Engine Optimization and digital learning tools, the method of preparation for civil services has also changed a lot. Now students are not limited to books only, rather they are extensively using AI-powered mock tests and online answer evaluation platforms. The Commission is also continuously upgrading the level of its questions keeping in mind this changing technological environment. This is the reason why those candidates who study current affairs in depth and analytically are more likely to be selected than students who study by traditional rote learning. At this juncture of the result, now all eyes are fixed on the official announcement of UPSC.
