A big and sharp news of this time is coming out from the political circles. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) firebrand MP Nishikant Dubey has made the biggest political attack so far on the Congress party and former Prime Ministers of the country. Making several posts one after the other on the social media platform ‘X’ (earlier Twitter) on Saturday, he put Congress in the dock regarding the river water sharing agreements signed with Bangladesh. Nishikant Dubey directly alleged that due to the decisions taken during the tenure of former Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi, a huge compromise was made with the interests of Indian farmers and border states. He has termed these agreements as a ‘dark chapter’ in the history of the country.
The agreement was signed on this very day, the page of history has been reversed
The BJP MP started his attack by citing historical dates. He wrote that on this day i.e. 30 May 1982, the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had again agreed with the Bangladeshi delegation on the sharing of water of river Ganga. Dubey told in a sequential manner that the agreement which was approved by Indira ji in 1976, was implemented for five years in 1977.
After this, new agreements were made with the then Bangladeshi President General Ershad in 1982 and again in 1985 during the tenure of Rajiv Gandhi. He claimed that for the first time in the year 1982, the idea of dividing the water of Teesta river in half was put forward, which harmed Indian interests.
Our farmers are committing suicide and water is going to Bangladesh: Nishikant Dubey
Accusing Congress of ignoring the needs of the country, Nishikant Dubey said that due to this policy, today farmers of Bihar, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh are facing severe water shortage. He wrote in an emotional and aggressive tone that farmers in our states are forced to commit suicide without water. Silt is accumulating in the river Ganga, but its precious water is being sent to Bangladesh.
He further said that the water of Teesta River, which is the lifeline of Sikkim and can generate huge amount of electricity and irrigation, is also being handed over to another country. The same situation happened with the Brahmaputra river which is called the lifeline of Assam and Bengal.
Vote bank politics and ‘Bangladesh Zindabad’ made serious allegations
Parliament member Dubey launched a sharp attack on the policies of the Congress, alleging that the party has always given priority to its vote bank politics over national interests. Using very strong words, he said that the main policy of Congress has always been to bring Bangladeshi infiltrators to India and give protection to anti-nationals only for the greed of vote bank. In return, today saying ‘Bangladesh Zindabad’ has become the guiding principle of Congress.
In fact, this comment of MP Dubey is based on the bitter truth of the agreements made in history between India and Bangladesh regarding sharing of Ganga and Teesta river water. According to records, in October 1982, an interim agreement was signed between Indira Gandhi and the then Bangladeshi leader Lieutenant General HM Ershad regarding sharing of Ganga water at Farakka. After this, in 1983, a temporary arrangement was made regarding Teesta River, under which India was decided to get 39 percent and Bangladesh 36 percent of the water, while the remaining 25 percent was left for future scientific study.
