A major controversy has emerged in the on-screen marking (OSM) system of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). According to government sources, around 20 cases of swapping of answer sheets have been detected during the digital evaluation process. Not only this, due to technical flaws, about 13 thousand answer sheets had to be evaluated in the traditional i.e. manual (by hand) way.
According to information received from sources, this time a total of 98 lakh answer sheets were being digitalized, out of which about 68,000 copies had quality problems during scanning. These were scanned again, but despite this, the required clarity could not be found in more than 13,000 copies. After this major glitch, IT teams are now closely examining the code of the system and the entire network so that it can be made completely error-free in future.
The students themselves caught this big mistake of the board
The technical glitch was revealed when students checked the scanned copies uploaded on their portal. Many students lodged complaints that the answer sheets being shown to them were not theirs. For example, when a student named ‘Vedant’ got his answer sheet, he was stunned because it was someone else’s copy. There is now a stir after this huge mistake in scanning.
Re-evaluation of class 12th is starting from June 1.
In view of the controversy in the OSM system this year, it is estimated that lakhs of students may apply for revaluation. Till now more than 4 lakh students have already applied for their scanned answer sheets. CBSE 12th students will be able to apply online for re-evaluation and scanned copy of answer sheet from June 1.
At present, it is not completely clear whether this process of re-evaluation will be done again through on-screen marking system or the board will conduct manual checking of copies. Considering the cases of exchange of copies, the board may decide to check it manually.
Strict rules for re-evaluation and mathematics of fees
CBSE has divided this entire process into two stages. In the first phase, students have been provided a scanned copy of their answer sheet. Now in the second phase, students can claim for verification of marks or revaluation of specific answers. The rules and fees for this are as follows:
-
Marks Verification Fee: If students only want to recalculate their marks, they will have to pay a fee of Rs 100.
-
Fees per question: If a student wants to re-check any particular answer, he/she will have to pay Rs 25 per question.
-
Fee Refund Policy: If after re-checking the number of the student increases even by one digit, then the board will refund the fee of this entire process to the student.
-
Risk of falling numbers: Students have to keep in mind that in re-checking the marks may increase or decrease. If during the correction of any mistake, the marks of the student are found to be less, then the marks will be reduced in the final marksheet.
