A very serious and shocking case of playing with the health and safety of students has come to light from Dalmia Hostel of the prestigious Kashi Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi. There was a stir here when a dead lizard was found in the vegetable served to the students in the hostel mess.

As soon as this news spread in the hostel, the students who had eaten that food immediately ran towards the hospital out of fear and panic. Angered by this incident, hundreds of students gathered outside the mess and raised slogans and demonstrated against the university administration and the mess management.

Proctorial board took charge, students safe

As soon as the news of huge uproar and anger in the hostel was received, the Proctorial Board and administrative officials of BHU immediately reached the spot. Administrative Warden of the Hostel Prof. Rajeev Batla, Prof. Raghav Mishra and Dr. Mahavir Panwar reached Dalmia Hostel with heavy security force and pacified the students by assuring them of strict action.

On the other hand, immediate medical aid was provided to the students who had consumed the contaminated vegetable. After the initial investigation done by the doctors, the relief news came out that the condition of all the students is completely normal and no symptoms of food poisoning were found in anyone. However, doctors and hostel administration are constantly monitoring his health.

Food is prepared amidst filth; Students exposed hostel secrets

After the situation calmed down, the students submitted a written complaint to the administrative warden of the hostel, making several serious allegations regarding the poor condition of the mess and hostel:

  • Hygiene violations: Students allege that cleanliness is not taken care of at all in the mess. Utensils are not cleaned properly and vegetarian and non-vegetarian food is cooked at the same place, without any proper separation.

  • Infrastructure crisis: Students told that there is shortage of clean drinking water (Water Crisis) in Dalmia Hostel for a long time.

  • Plight of toilets: The condition of hostel toilets is very bad and they are not cleaned for weeks. According to the students, complaints were made several times before, but the administration kept turning a blind eye to it.

Mess closed with immediate effect, notice to blacklist the operator

Taking a strict stance on this very sensitive matter, the Warden of Dalmia Hostel, Prof. Raghav Mishra said, “This incident is extremely unfortunate and unbearable. Initial investigation has revealed that after cooking food in mess number four, when it was being taken out in small utensils for serving, this accident probably happened at that time.”

Taking strict action against this gross negligence of the mess operator, the Warden has issued the following orders:

  1. mess number four closed with immediate effect Has been done.

  2. to the negligent mess operator Blacklist ‘Show Cause Notice’ has been issued.

  3. Instructions have also been given to fix other problems of the hostel (water and cleanliness) as soon as possible.
