Kyiv: At least eight people were killed and 10 others were wounded in missile attacks by Russia overnight Saturday on Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city, Al Jazeera reported, citing regional officials. According to regional officials, the Russian army used bombs and missiles. Ukraine police said that this dreadful attack was carried out by drone. Local authorities released photos of the attack on the Internet, showing streets and buildings on fire.
At least six people were killed in missile attacks overnight, according to Kharkiv Governor Oleh Sinihubov. Later the death toll increased to eight.
Meanwhile, Kharkiv Mayor Igor Terekhov confirmed that figure and said ten more people were injured.
“The attack hit residential areas – at least nine high-rise buildings, three dormitories, several administrative buildings, a shop, a petrol station, a service station and cars were damaged,” Terekhov said, according to Al Jazeera.
The Ukrainian military said on Facebook that, in retaliation, three out of six Russian missiles and 28 out of 32 drones were shot down by its air defenses.
Following the midnight attacks, airstrike warnings remained in place across much of the country, including Kharkiv and the capital Kiev, for several hours, Al Jazeera reported.
Kharkiv, the capital of the city of the same name, is located just 30 kilometers from the Russian border and has been experiencing frequent bombardments since Moscow launched its offensive in February 2022.
The attacks have intensified in the last few weeks. A drone strike on the city on Wednesday killed four people and caused extensive damage to apartment buildings.
