Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway Update: Infrastructure revolution has come in Uttar Pradesh. The year 2026 is going to prove to be a year of gifts for UP. While on one hand projects like Namo Bharat Rapid Rail and Ganga Expressway are in the final stages, on the other hand the magnificent 63 km long Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway is ready to ‘eliminate’ the distance between Lucknow and Kanpur. Now the traffic jam will end and you will reach your destination at a fast pace.
Freedom from jam and superfast connectivity
At present, to go from Lucknow to Kanpur, passengers have to face heavy traffic and jam in Unnao. Currently, it takes two and a half to three hours to cover this journey of 70-80 km and if the conditions are bad then even 5-6 hours are wasted. But this 6-lane expressway will cover this distance in just less than an hour. The special thing is that heavy vehicles will no longer need to enter the city, due to which local traffic will also remain smooth.
Speed of 120 km/h and state-of-the-art technology
The design speed of this expressway has been kept at 120 km per hour. For safety reasons, only cars and other four-wheelers will be able to drive on it; There will be a ban on entry of bikes and autos. 18 km of this 63 km long route is elevated, which makes it very modern. This route has been developed on ‘Greenland’, i.e. built where there was no road before.
UP’s smallest but most expensive expressway
According to NHAI data, this expressway is one of the most expensive projects in UP. Its cost per kilometer is approximately Rs 75 crore (total more than Rs 4700 crore), which is much more than the per kilometer cost of Ganga Expressway (63 crore). Four modern toll plazas have been built on it. The one-way toll for the car has been fixed at ₹275 and the return toll within 24 hours has been fixed at ₹415.
Outer Ring Road and unique confluence of below and above
Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway has been connected to Lucknow Outer Ring Road, so that passengers coming from Kanpur will be able to go towards Hardoi, Rae Bareli, Sitapur and Sultanpur without getting stuck in the city. Presenting a unique example of engineering, the National Highway NH-25 will be below it and the elevated part of the expressway will run just above it. It will remain 4-lane from Amausi to Darogakheda in Lucknow and will be converted into 6-lane in future.
Monitoring will be done through AI cameras and control room
No compromise has been made in terms of security. 360 degree rotating CCTV cameras have been installed at every kilometer. Also, the control room will get automatic alerts of incidents like overspeeding, accident or fire through ‘Video Incident Detection System’ (VIDS). For the convenience of the local population, 38 underpasses and 31 small and big bridges have been constructed.
When will the journey start?
According to reports, Prime Minister Narendra Modi can inaugurate the Ganga Expressway on April 29, after which there is every possibility of the Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway being opened to the public in the month of May.
