News India Live, Digital Desk: In today’s digital era, smartphones have become an integral part of our lives, but do you know how damaging moving fingers on the screen is for your health? A large part of India’s young population is now in the grip of ‘scrolling’, due to which not only their mental state is being affected, but many body parts have also started responding. According to recent health reports, serious diseases related to neck, back and eyes have increased to dangerous levels among the youth due to being glued to the phone for hours. What we think of as entertainment is slowly acting like a ‘silent killer’.
Text Neck Syndrome: Bending neck and weak spine
While using the phone, we often keep our neck bent forward. According to medical experts, it is called ‘text neck syndrome’. When you tilt your head at an angle of 45 to 60 degrees, there is an additional load of about 27 kg on your neck. This increases the risk of pain in the cervical spine, stiffness in the shoulders and curvature of the spine. Nowadays, the problem of slip disc and neck pain is being seen in the youth of 20 to 30 years of age, just like it was seen in the elderly of 60 years.
The deepening crisis of digital eye strain and insomnia
Constantly looking at the screen causes excessive strain on the eyes, which is called ‘digital eye strain’. Its symptoms include dryness in the eyes, blurred vision and frequent headaches. Not only this, the ‘blue light’ emitted from phones at night stops the production of melatonin hormone in our body. This is the same hormone that helps us fall into deep sleep. Due to lack of sleep, cases of irritability, stress and even depression are increasingly emerging among the youth.
Smartphone thumb and attack on mental health
Continuously scrolling the screen or typing with the thumb is causing a problem like ‘smartphone thumb’, in which the nerves of the thumb become swollen and cause unbearable pain. Apart from physical ailments, comparing oneself by seeing the ‘perfect’ life of others on social media is destroying the self-confidence of the youth. Watching reels for hours in search of dopamine has become such an addiction that it completely destroys concentration. If this habit is not controlled in time, it can become a serious health crisis for the coming generations.
