News India Live, Digital Desk: If you are also fond of eating outside, then this news is very important for you. It is often seen that hotels and restaurants add many hidden charges to the food bill, but now the Central Government has taken a strict stance on this. The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has given strict instructions to eateries and restaurant owners across the country to stop charging extra from customers in the name of LPG.

Robbery on consumers’ pockets will not be tolerated: CCPA

According to the information received, CCPA was continuously receiving complaints that many restaurant and dhaba operators were charging ‘LPG charge’ or ‘Fuel Surcharge’ separately in the food bill. Citing consumer rights, the authority has clarified that all costs are included in the price of food, hence demanding separate money in the name of gas comes under the category of completely illegal and unfair trade practice.

Direct action will be taken on complaint, license also in danger

CCPA Chief Commissioner Nidhi Khare has issued instructions saying that if any restaurant is found making such recovery, it will not only be imposed a heavy fine but strict legal action will also be taken. Consumers have been advised to read the bill carefully before making payment. If any column like ‘LPG Charge’ appears in the bill, they can immediately lodge a complaint on the ‘National Consumer Helpline’ (1915).

After service charge, now there is anger on gas charge

Let us tell you that before this there has been a lot of tussle between the government and restaurant operators regarding service charge. The government believes that the cost of cooking, service and taxes should already be included in the rates written in the menu card. Asking for separate fuel money is like misleading the customers. After this new order, now district collectors have also been instructed to increase surveillance in their areas.

What is your advice to customers?

Experts say that customers should be aware of their rights. If a hotel owner forcibly levies such charges, you can refuse to pay the bill and can also lodge a complaint online through the e-Daakhil portal. This strictness of the government is expected to provide a big relief to middle class families, who often fall victim to these hidden charges while eating out.
