The 5-hour long ‘marathon meeting’ was ineffective, Putin found flaws in the American peace proposal:

Ukraine Peace Talks: The hopes of ending the long war between Ukraine and Russia have once again suffered a setback on Tuesday. The eyes of the world were fixed on the Kremlin in Moscow, where US President Donald Trump’s special team had reached with a peace proposal. But, despite long talks and heavy bickering, the result remained the same – ‘Dhak ke teen paat’.

There were discussions between Russian President Vladimir Putin and the American delegation for 5 hours, but in the end the Kremlin made it clear that no agreement has been reached at the moment.

Trump’s son-in-law and Putin meet

This high-profile meeting included Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner and his special envoy Steve Witkoff from the US side. He took a revised peace proposal to Washington. According to Kremlin aides, the American plan was divided into four parts, on which brainstorming took place for about five hours.

But it did not work out. Senior Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov said that the talks were ‘useful’, but America’s formulas do not fit Russia. Putin expressed his displeasure on many proposals and adopted a critical stance.

Where is the problem?

The biggest hurdle is regarding ‘land’ and ‘surveillance’.

  1. Land dispute: Putin is adamant on his old demand. They want Kiev (Ukraine) to give up those areas which Russia claims as its own.
  2. ‘No entry’ to European forces: The US proposal probably included a role for European forces in monitoring the ceasefire, which the Kremlin rejected outright. Russia does not want its border to be guarded by any outside army.

“We have not yet reached any conclusions, although some American suggestions may be discussed further,” Ushakov said.

Ukraine’s fear: ‘There may be no game behind us’

Ukraine’s heartbeat has increased due to this meeting. President Zelensky fears that America and Russia may together make a deal behind his back. Zelensky said clearly on social media, “There will be no easy solutions. But what is most important is transparency. There should be no decisions about Ukraine and about our future without us.”

He wants the peace agreement to be durable, not that the war stops today and starts again tomorrow.

Trump said- ‘The matter is messed up’

On the other hand, in Washington, Donald Trump also admitted that the path is difficult. He said in his own style, “Our people are in Russia to see if this can be sorted out. But let me tell you, this is not an easy situation. It’s a mess.”

For now, there is hope for peace, but finding a way between Putin’s conditions and Ukraine’s sovereignty is proving to be a difficult task.
