Asia’s largest cattle fair, the world famous Harihar Kshetra Sonpur Fair, is now slowly moving towards its final stages. Where once the entire fair used to echo with the hoofs of thousands of horses, now their number has reduced to a mere nominal amount. The situation is such that now only 50 horses are left for sale in the huge horse market of the fair.

According to the report released by the Animal Husbandry Department on November 22, a total of 2049 horses have been sold in the Sonpur fair this year. This time the price of the most expensive horse was Rs 1.10 lakh, while the cheapest horse was sold for Rs 52 thousand. The decreasing number of horses has also disappointed the old experts of the fair.

The horses are gone, but the goats and dogs bring joy.

Even though the glamor of the horse market has faded, there is still a lot of activity in the other animal markets of the fair.

  • Goat Market: This market is the most buzzing at this time. 540 goats and sheep were brought to the fair, out of which 256 have been sold so far.
  • Dog Market: This fair is no less than a paradise for dog lovers. 411 dogs of different breeds have been brought here, out of which 59 have found new owners.
  • Apart from these, 17 Murrah buffaloes and 12 royal Jersey cows are also present in the fair, which are attracting the attention of the buyers.

7 police officers found missing from duty, SP stopped salary

On one hand, while the fair is at its final stage, on the other hand, a major case of negligence in security arrangements has come to light. Saran’s senior SP Dr. Kumar Ashish has taken major action against 7 police officers who were found missing without explanation from fair duty.

When investigation was done, all these 7 officers were found missing from their respective places of posting. Considering this as gross dereliction of duty, the SP has stopped the salaries of all of them with immediate effect and has ordered them to give their explanation within 7 days. The SP has clearly said that those who do good work in Saran Police will get rewards, while similar strict action will continue against those who are negligent.
