This is a month which comes once every three years and has great importance from the religious point of view.

Why are there more periods?
To understand this, we have to understand the science of calendar a little. Our Hindu calendar is based on the calculations of Sun and Moon. The solar year is of 365 days, while the lunar year is of 354 days. There is a difference of about 11 days between the two. To equalize this difference, every three years an additional month is added, which is called ‘Adhik Maas’.
When is Purushottam month in 2026?
In the year 2026, Adhik Maas will take place in the month of Jyeshtha. According to the calendar, this month Starting on Sunday, May 17, 2026 and ending on Monday, June 15, 2026. This entire month will be called ‘Adhik Jyestha’.
Why is it called ‘Purushottam month’?
According to a legend, when this additional month was formed, no god wanted to become its master. Because of this, this month came to be called ‘Malmas’ i.e. inauspicious. Then this month went to the shelter of Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu was pleased and gave it his name ‘Purushottam’ and gave the boon that whoever does any work of devotion, charity and virtue in this month will get manifold rewards. Since then this month started being called ‘Purushottam month’.
What to do and what not to do in this month?
- What to do: Purushottam month is considered best for worshiping Lord Vishnu. During this period, doing charity, virtue, chanting, penance and reciting Shrimad Bhagwat Katha is very fruitful. Bathing in holy rivers also has special significance.
- What not to do: Even though this month is considered very auspicious for worship, it is prohibited to perform auspicious activities like marriage, house warming, mundan etc.
