News India Live, Digital Desk: Ghatshila By-Election : The by-election being held on Ghatshila assembly seat of Jharkhand has become a question of prestige for the Soren family and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM). To win this one seat, former Chief Minister Hemant Soren and his wife Kalpana Soren have put in all their strength. On Monday, both of them campaigned vigorously for JMM candidate Ramdas Soren by holding election meetings and road shows in different areas of Ghatshila.

Hemant’s direct attack on Champai, Kalpana targets BJP

Former Chief Minister Hemant Soren directly attacked Chief Minister Champai Soren in his election speeches. He accused Champai Soren of betraying JMM and joining hands with BJP. Hemant made an emotional appeal saying that when he was in jail, Champai Soren stabbed him in the back.

On the other hand, Kalpana Soren targeted the BJP government at the Center and her sister-in-law and BJP candidate Sita Soren. Kalpana said, “This election is not just to elect an MLA, but it is a fight to save the identity and self-respect of Jharkhand. The time has come to teach a lesson to those who fraudulently sent Hemant ji to jail.” Taking aim at Sita Soren, he said that the public will never forgive those who betrayed the family and the party.

Why has this election become so important?

Ghatsila by-election is, in many ways, a ‘do or die’ situation for JMM and the Soren family:

• JMM’s stronghold: Ghatshila has traditionally been a stronghold of JMM. Losing here would be a big blow for the party.
• Seal on Leadership: This election will decide who is the real leader of JMM – Hemant Soren or Champai Soren. By winning this election, Hemant wants to prove that he still has control over the party.
• Family Reputation: Hemant Soren’s sister-in-law Sita Soren contesting the elections on BJP ticket is also making it a fight within the Soren family.
• Litmus test of upcoming assembly elections: The results of this by-election can also be an indication for the upcoming assembly elections.
