Famous social activist Sonam Wangchuk was arrested on Friday under the Strict National Security Act (NSA). He has been transferred to Jodhpur Central Jail, where he is placed in a high-protection ward with 24-hour security and CCTV monitoring. Asaram Bapu has also been kept in this jail, but in a separate ward. This action took place two days after violent demonstrations demanding state status and constitutional protection to Ladakh, killing four people in the Union Territory and 90 people were injured.
Significantly, the Ladakh administration has stopped all mobile internet connections in Leh district as a precaution. Wangchuk’s arrest was a shocking incident amid rapidly changing developments. He was supposed to address a press conference in Leh at 2:30 pm on Friday afternoon, but the organizers were worried when they did not arrive at the scheduled time. It was soon revealed that a team of Ladakh police led by Director General of Police SD Singh Jamwal arrested Sonam Wangchuk from his village Uliakatopo.
Violence by uncontrolled youth
Although the organizers held the prescribed press conference and admitted that the recent violence was caused by the unruly youth, but denied any foreign involvement in it. Leh Apex Body (LAB) co-chairman Tsering Dorje denied any foreign involvement in the violence and demanded a judicial inquiry into the Wednesday incident, killing four people.
The Ministry of Home Affairs does not call us for time talks.
He alleged that the police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel fired indiscriminately at the protesters without using any other method as a water splash or warning. Dorji said, “We have made it clear that if the Ministry of Home Affairs does not call us on time, we will intensify our movement. We also said that our movement will be peaceful and non -violent.”
He said that the 35 -day hunger strike led by Sonam Wangchuk started on September 10 with a joint prayer meeting, after which the central government invited him for 6 October. Meanwhile, uncomfortable peace remains in the Himalayan region. Curfew remained in force for the third consecutive day in Leh and no untoward incident was reported from anywhere in the Union Territory.

Curfew was imposed on Wednesday evening after extensive violence. Earlier, violence erupted during protests demanding state status in Ladakh and expansion of the sixth schedule of the Constitution, killing four people. A police officer said that the security situation in Ladakh is peaceful. Later the restrictions can be relaxed during the day to facilitate the purchase of essential items to the people.
More than 50 people were detained after the clashes, while five or more people have been banned in other major cities of the Union Territory including Kargil. A high-level team of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has reached Leh to review the situation.
Opposition leaders’ response to arrest
The arrest of Wangchuk was a day after the Home Ministry canceled the FCRA license issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Students Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh (SECMOL). Opposition leaders have reacted sharply to the arrest of Wangchuk, a prominent leader of the Ladakh rights movement, which has been going on for five years and blamed the Central Government for the way the situation deal with.
Reacting sharply to the arrest, Wangchuk’s wife Geetanjali Angamo accused the government of spreading lies to tarnish their image. Angamo alleged that he was being treated like a criminal without any reason. He also alleged that the police vandalized his house.
Question on BJP’s principles
Referring to the BJP, he said, “They should not do false propagation as they are doing.” He questioned the principles of the BJP and said that he is not a Hindu in any way. The BJP is not Hindu because its foundation rests on lies. Some opposition parties alleged that these arrests have clearly exposed the government’s policy to target people and suppress disagreement.
