News India Live, Digital Desk: Flood Disaster: The Kolkata city has recently broken such havoc of nature that it has scared everyone. There was a record rain, which brought the city to the knees within only 24 hours. Such fierce rain was not seen in the last 40 years – after 1986 such scene has now come to light, when about 247 to 251.4 mm of rain has been recorded! This ‘Jala Holocaust’ has disturbed the entire city and the sad news is that so far about 9 to 10 people have lost their lives.
The entire Kolkata is immersed in water. Instead of trains on the roads, water is now flooded, somewhere it seems that these roads have become small rivers. Water has entered the low-lying areas of many houses and shops, which has ruined the goods of the people and their work has come to a standstill. Talking about transport, buses, trains and metro – are all closed or are running very late. Even at Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport, dozens of flights had to be canceled or had to be stopped.
All this is happening at a time when Bengali was immersed in the preparations for its biggest festival, Durga Puja. This rain has destroyed all his enthusiasm. Many big puja pandals have been completely submerged, and some have also been harmed. The organizers have suffered a lot. Even some sculptures have been covered with heavy plastic (torpolin). There is so much panic in the city that even the school-colleges of children have been closed, and the state government had to declare Durga Puja holidays in advance. Most of the people who have lost their lives have died due to electric current, which makes this disaster even more painful.
State Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has blamed poor dragging and negligence of a private power company (CESC) in Farakka Barrage for this terrible situation. He has also promised compensation and job to the victims’ families. It shows that when nature is angry, how big human difficulties become, especially in such festivals, this pain increases further.
