News India Live, Digital Desk: Vice President Election Process: The country will get its next Vice President today. Voting is going on in Parliament House from 10 am today for this election after the resignation of former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, which will run till 5 pm. The contest is the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate CP Radhakrishnan and opposition ‘India’ alliance candidate B.K. Sudarshan is between Reddy. The counting of votes will also start from 6 pm today and the picture will be cleared by late night.
Come, let’s understand some interesting things related to this election and its entire mathematics in easy language.
Who cast the vote and how is counting?
Unlike the presidential election, only MPs vote in the Vice Presidential elections. All members of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha (both elected and nominated) participate in it. Overall, there are 788 MPs, but due to some seats being vacant, this time only 781 MPs are casting votes. To win, any candidate will need more than half, ie 391 votes.
What does the game of data say?
If we look at the existing figures, the victory of NDA candidate CP Radhakrishnan is considered almost certain. The NDA has a majority figure in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. At the same time, he seems to be supporting some other parties like YSR Congress, which is expected to cross their number of votes to cross 427. On the other hand, opposition candidate B.K. Sudarshan Reddy is expected to have more than 324 votes. Given this mathematics, this match looks unilateral.
When the Vice President elected unopposed and who recorded the biggest win
The history of India’s Vice Presidential election has been very interesting. The country has found unopposed Vice President four times. Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan twice (in 1952 and 1957), Mohammad Hidayatullah (in 1979) and Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma (in 1987) were elected to this post without any match.
If we talk about the biggest win in the election match, then this record is former President K.R. Narayanan’s name is recorded. He received 700 votes out of 701 votes cast in the 1992 Vice Presidential election. It is one of the biggest victories in Indian electoral history.
If we look at the last few elections, the difference of victory has increased continuously:
- 2017: Venkaiah Naidu defeated the opposition candidate by 272 votes.
- 2022: Jagdeep Dhankhar defeated the opposition candidate by a big margin of 346 votes.
Given the current political atmosphere and data, it is certain that when the results are announced late this evening, the country will get its 15th Vice President.
