The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has for the first time passed a resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza amid the more than five-month-long war between Israel and Hamas. During the meeting held in the month of Ramadan, 14 out of 15 members voted in favor of the resolution while the US remained absent.
The proposal calls for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages. It also calls for the removal of all obstacles to providing humanitarian assistance to Gaza. This is the first time that America has not voted on a ceasefire proposal. He has vetoed these resolutions in UNSC thrice before.
Will the war stop if the resolution is passed in UNSC?
UNSC resolutions are considered international law. Member states are required to comply. However, Israel is neither a permanent nor a non-permanent member of the UNSC. In such a situation, he is not bound to accept this proposal.
Even if a resolution is passed in the Security Council, there is no way to implement it. It is possible that many sanctions can be imposed on Israel with the consent of the member countries.
The first proposal to prevent an Israel–Hamas war was presented by Malta in November 2023. The proposal was made for the second time by the UAE in December 2023 and for the third time in February 2024 by the North African country Algeria. America rejected him all three times.
Netanyahu took a big decision
Israel has expressed displeasure over America's withdrawal from the UNSC vote. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu has canceled Defense Minister Yoav Galant's visit to Washington after America did not veto it.
Apart from this, Israel's Foreign Minister said that we will not stop the firing. We will destroy Hamas and continue fighting the war until every hostage is free and returns home.
On the other hand, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres wrote on the social media platform that the UNSC has approved the long pending resolution in Gaza. It demanded an immediate ceasefire and the unconditional release of all hostages. This proposal should be implemented soon.

UNSC has five permanent members. Which includes America, Russia, Britain, France and China. Only he has veto power. It is very important. The Security Council cannot pass or implement any resolution without the consent of these five countries. If even one of the five members vetoes the proposal, it is rejected.
