India’s first budget

The first budget of India was presented during the British period. India presented its first budget on 7 April 1860. The Finance Minister at this time was James Wilson. He presented this budget before the public. But after India’s independence, the country’s budget was presented for the first time in 1947 by RK Shanmukham Chetty.

Till the year 1955, the Union Budget was presented only in English language. But later it was also presented in Hindi language. Former Finance Minister C.D. Deshmukh began releasing Bejatan in Hindi and English.
