Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday said Assam should learn from Israel how to protect itself even when surrounded by enemies. Speaking to reporters on the occasion of Swahid Day celebrations in Sonitpur district, he said that Assam’s borders were never secure.
Assam historically shares borders with Bangladesh, Myanmar and West Bengal. Assamese are a minority in 12 states. “We should learn something from the history of a country like Israel,” he said. One must learn to use knowledge, science and technology bravely for defense even in a situation surrounded by enemies. We can save our race by becoming a strong country. Swaheed Day is being celebrated in the memory of Khadgeshwar Talukdar, the first martyr of the six-year long Assam movement. After that movement, Assam Accord became possible on 15 August 1985. Participating in a program organized by the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha on the occasion of Swahid, Sarma said that even 40 years after the Assam Accord, the threat to people outside the state has not gone away. Demographics are changing every day. Every day local people are losing their land rights. Political security is ensured for the next five years through impeachment, but the people have to become economically self-reliant to prevent the state from falling into the hands of strangers.
