France votes no confidence in Barnier: The government has fallen in France. France’s right-wing and left-wing lawmakers on Wednesday ousted Prime Minister Michel Barnier on a no-confidence motion. Prime Minister Barnier and his cabinet members had to resign after the passage of this motion, brought about by budget disputes. This is the first time since 1962 that a no-confidence motion has been brought in the country. There is also pressure on the country’s President Emmanuel Macron to resign. However, he has said that he will complete his tenure by 2027.
Emmanuel Macron will address the nation this evening
On Wednesday, the National Assembly of France approved this proposal by 331 votes. It required a minimum of 288 watts. Following the parliamentary elections held in June–July, the French Parliament was divided into three major parts. No single party got absolute majority. After the partition, Emmanuel Macron will have to appoint a new Prime Minister for the second time. Macron will address the nation this evening. It is expected that Barnier will formally resign by then.
Know why there is protest
The whole controversy started with Barnier’s opposition to the proposed budget. No single party has a majority in the National Assembly, the lower house of the French Parliament. It includes three main groups – Macron’s centrist allies, the leftist alliance New Popular Front and the right-wing National Rally. The two opposition groups, which are usually at odds, are uniting in their opposition to Barnier. The opposition accused Barnier of failing to meet the needs of citizens.
Barnier is the shortest serving Prime Minister
Conservative leader Barnier, appointed in September, has become the shortest-serving prime minister in modern France. “I can tell you that it will be an honor for me to serve France and the French people,” Barnier said in his last speech before the vote on the resolution. ‘This no-confidence motion will make things more difficult.’
Macron will have to choose a new Prime Minister
Meanwhile, a new dilemma has arisen before President Macron. Amidst the crisis, Macron will have to appoint a new Prime Minister. Elections for the new legislature will not be held in the country before July and running the Parliament may be difficult. Amidst the pressure, Macron has said that there is no truth in the talk of his possible resignation. “I am here because I have been elected twice by the French people,” Macron said. We should not scare people with such things. Our economy is very strong and there is no threat.
