On Wednesday, there was a round of geological movement in Russia’s Kamchatka region on the banks of the Pacific Ocean which shocked the whole world. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), four powerful earthquakes in the region shook the earth, whose intensity was measured by 8.7. Due to these earthquakes, not only the coast of Russia but also distant areas like Japan, Alaska and even Hawaii came under the threat of tsunami.

Following these disastrous earthquakes, the US National Meteorological Service (NWS) tsunami alert immediately issued several advisories and watches. A tsunami advisory was issued for Alaska’s Alusian Island series, which extends from Attu to Timga Pass, USA. This warning was also pointing to a potential tsunami threat to Russia and Japan. Waves of up to 1 meter were estimated for Japan, while waves of more than 3 meters high in Russia’s coastal areas were feared. Along with this, a tsunami watch was also released for the islands of Hawaii, Guam and North Mariana, which raged a wave of concern among the people living on these islands. Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) also confirmed that 1 meter high tsunami waves could reach the banks of Japan after these shaking.

Earthquakes and Tectonic Plates: scientific analysis of seismic activities

According to USGS, this earthquake was the result of shallow reverse faulting. According to geology, the continuous speed of the Earth’s tectonic plates is the main cause of these earthquakes. Here, the Pacific Plate is moving towards west-north-west at a rate of about 77 mm per year relative to the North American Plate, while the North American plate extends beyond the continent. The collision and friction of this type of plates leads to a huge amount of energy, which manifests as an earthquake.

More risk of shallow earthquakes: Why are they more dangerous?

Scientists believe that shallow earthquakes are more dangerous than deep earthquakes. The simple reason for this is that seismic waves coming out of shallow earthquakes have to travel short to reach the surface. Due to this short distance, the ground shaking on the surface is much more intense, causing more damage to buildings and infrastructure and can also increase the number of casualties. In contrast, the waves coming out of deep earthquakes have to lose a large part of their energy by reaching the surface, which reduces their effects.

Kuril-Kampachka Arc: Center of seismic activity!

USGS reported that the location of this earthquake and the direction of motion, the subduction zone plate of Kuril-Kamchatka Arc (subduction zone plate interface) is in line with flying. This area is constantly known for medium to larger earthquakes. In fact, more than 31 earthquakes have been recorded at 6.5 or more intensity in the last 100 years in the region, which reflects its high seismic activity.

Earthquake order: 8.0 to 8.7 intensity

According to the USGS, the first earthquake, the intensity of 8.0 measured, came to the south-east of Petropavlovsk-Kamachkski. Soon after, another earthquake of the same intensity (8.0) was recorded in the same area. Shortly thereafter, an earthquake of 6.9 magnitude came to the southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kampachtski, and then another earthquake of 6.3 magnitude was recorded in the southeast of Vilchinsk. Later, the total intensity of these tremors was upgraded to 8.7, which further enhanced its destructive effect.

Importance of Tsunami Advisory and Watch: Why are these warnings released?

Tsunami Watch means that there is a danger of a possible tsunami and people should be ready. It is an early warning released on the basis of geological data. At the same time, Tsunami Advisory means that tsunami is expected, but there is less possibility of large -scale destructive floods, yet there may be dangerous streams and waves.
