Israel-Hamas War: US President Donald Trump has recently proposed to transfer Palestinian refugees from Gaza to Jordan, Egypt and other Arab countries. He has suggested to create settlements elsewhere so that Palestinians can live in peace. Trump wants the war -torn area to be evacuated and the population should be evacuated. But how appropriate is Trump’s suggestion and what will be the effect on Gaza and Arab countries?
Gaza has been destroyed by 15 months of severe Israeli attacks. Meanwhile, Trump’s proposal has not only created a possibility of eviction of 23 lakh Palestinians of Gaza from their homes, but the concern of Arab countries has also increased.
Since 1948, 60 million people have migrated
Since the establishment of Israel in 1948, about six million Palestinians have escaped. At that time many people took refuge in neighboring Arab countries like Jordan, Syria and Lebanon. Many people are still living in refugee camps. Given this sad history, the people of Gaza are afraid of any new migration, which can make them homeless again.
In the Middle East War of 1967, when Israel captured the West Bank and Gaza Strip, more than 300,000 Palestinians were forced to flee their homes again, most of them moved to Jordan. 60 million people have left Gaza and moved to Arab countries, most of which live in camps and communities in West Banks, Gaza, Lebanon, Syria and Jordan.
Israel wreaked havoc in Gaza
This time in Gaza, Israel destroyed most of the urban areas in the attack. Palestinian and United Nations officials say that there are only a few safe shelter left in Gaza. On 7 October 2023, Hamas attacked Israel and the crisis deepened. In response to this attack, Israel has so far killed more than 47,000 Palestinians in Gaza. The United Nations estimates that 85% of Gaza have already been displaced from their homes.
What is the condition of Egypt?
Egypt has already closed its boundary with Gaza firmly. Egypt has already banned the entry of outsiders except some foreign nationals. Egypt and other Arab countries oppose the Palestinians out of their boundaries. Arab countries fear that if this migration occurs, it will become a big threat to regional stability.
According to the United Nations, Egypt, facing the growing economic crisis, is already hosting about 9 million refugees and migrants. This includes around 300,000 Sudani who have fled from the war of their country this year.
What are Arabia, West and United Nations saying?
Egypt and Jordan have made it clear from the beginning that Palestinian people cannot be extracted from that land. On which they want to create a future state including West Bank and Gaza. Arab countries are afraid that if Palestinians go away then the situation here will also deteriorate.
Top United Nations officials have also expressed their concern on the issue. As United Nations official Martin Griffiths said in February 2024, it is a big lie that Gaza people can visit safe places. He believed that there is no safe place left in Gaza and it is not a solution to get Palestinians out.
What is Israel’s strategy?
According to a report by Reuters in 2024, Israeli leaders have tried to gain some strategic benefits beyond their military operations. Their goal is to ensure long -term security rather than military victory by establishing a buffer zone or security area around Gaza. Under this, they want to ensure that the border of Israel with the Gaza Strip is protected from any future attacks.
