In the national capital Delhi, security arrangements have been tightened to a historic level regarding the burning of Ravana and Dussehra celebrations on the holy festival of Vijayadashami. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to attend the grand Dussehra and Ravana Dahan program to be organized at Utsav Maidan in IP Extension in East Delhi on Tuesday evening. In view of this VVIP visit, the security agencies have transformed the entire area into an impenetrable camp. More than 2,500 brave men of paramilitary forces and Delhi Police have been deployed in and around the venue. Along with this, a tight vigil has been set up with modern drones, snipers and 3-tier security cordon to keep a close watch from air to ground. To save the general public and drivers from jams in the evening, Delhi Traffic Police has also issued extensive diversion and traffic advisory from 5 pm to 8 pm.
In view of the possible arrival of the Prime Minister, the security arrangements have been divided into three extremely strong security layers. According to officials, the most internal and important security cordon will be handled by the commandos of the Special Protection Group (SPG), who have already taken the entire area of the festival grounds and the stage under their direct control. The second central circle of security has been formed by specially trained personnel of the Prime Minister’s Security Wing of Delhi Police and lethal commandos of the SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics) unit of Delhi Police. The responsibility of the outermost security circle has been entrusted to the local Delhi Police and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) personnel. This three-tier maze has been designed to completely thwart every possible possibility of any unexpected danger, protest by anti-social elements or disruption of the route.
Around 10,000 devotees and spectators are likely to gather in this grand Ravana Dahan ceremony to be organized at the Utsav Ground of IP Extension. According to senior security officials, the Prime Minister is expected to reach the venue at around 6:30 pm. Keeping security standards on top priority, only those people will be allowed to enter the venue who have valid identity cards or official passes issued by the organizing committee. Door Frame Metal Detectors (DFMD), Handheld Metal Detectors (HHMD) and high capacity modern baggage scanners have been installed at all entry points of the grounds. Every person entering the venue will be thoroughly searched. Several rounds of intensive anti-sabotage checks have been completed by the SPG and bomb disposal squads, while sniffer dogs and quick reaction teams (QRTs) are continuously patrolling the area.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Eastern District) Rajeev Kumar clarified that foolproof security and traffic arrangements have been made at the IP Extension ground and surrounding sensitive areas. Intensive reconnaissance of all multi-storey and high-rise buildings located around the grounds has been completed and rooftop snipers equipped with binoculars and modern weapons have been deployed on strategic rooftops. To immediately control any suspicious activity, live video feed is being taken from the sky through drone cameras at every nook and corner. Additional CCTV cameras have been installed at the venue which are being coordinated live 24 hours a day from a dedicated control room. Ambulances, fire brigade vehicles and mobile patrolling vans have been kept on alert mode at the venue to deal with any emergency.
Keeping in mind the safety of the Prime Minister’s convoy and the general public, Delhi Traffic Police has imposed traffic diversion from 5 pm to 8 pm on several major routes of Central, South and especially East Delhi. Traffic has been partially restricted or diverted on National Highway-24 (NH-24), Vikas Marg, Road No. 55, Road No. 57 and Road No. 57A around Patparganj, Mayur Vihar and Ghazipur in East Delhi. To maintain smooth traffic management, more than 300 traffic policemen have been deployed on the roads, commanded by five senior officers of the rank of Deputy Commissioner/Additional Deputy Commissioner and nine Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) level officers.
Delhi Traffic Police has issued a detailed advisory for passengers and drivers, appealing them to plan their journey in advance to avoid inconvenience and use alternative routes instead of the affected main routes. Drivers have been given strict instructions to drive with extra time, park their vehicles only in authorized parking spaces and completely avoid illegal parking on roadsides. The traffic police has requested all citizens to remain patient and strictly follow the directions of the traffic personnel deployed at the intersections.
