For his upcoming film ‘The Odyssey’, Nolan used his favorite film reels instead of digital cameras, and that too not just one or two, but more than 2 million feet (about 610 kilometers)! This shows his passion that he can go to any extent to bring his story on screen.
4 months in the open sea, battle with real waves
‘The Odyssey’ is an ancient epic written by the great Greek poet Homer, in which King Odysseus (Matt Damon) undertakes a long and dangerous sea voyage to return home after winning the Battle of Troy. Nolan wanted this conflict to look absolutely real on screen. That’s why instead of setting up a fake set in a studio, he spent almost four months in the open and dangerous ocean with the film’s cast and crew.
Nolan explained in an interview, “We took the actors to real places, amidst real waves. The ocean is vast, scary, beautiful and merciful all at once, as circumstances change.” He believed that this was the only way to capture on screen how difficult such journeys would have been in those times.
Why is shooting on film reels special?
Today, when almost the entire world is making films with digital cameras, it is a big deal for Nolan to shoot with IMAX film cameras. It will be the first film to be shot entirely on IMAX cameras. The quality, color and depth of footage shot on film reels looks more real than digital, and that’s the magic of Nolan’s cinema. But IMAX cameras are very heavy and expensive and shooting with them in the middle of the ocean was a huge challenge.
‘The Odyssey’ is adorned with stars
This film is said to be the most expensive film of Nolan’s career, with a budget of around $250 million. Big stars of Hollywood are working in it. Matt Damon stars in the lead role, while his son is played by Tom Holland. Apart from these, many other well-known faces like Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson and Charlize Theron will also be seen in the film.
