135 years old bridge over which the train passes, it seems as if the swing is swinging

In Kasganj district of Uttar Pradesh, there is a bridge over the Ganges river which is not just iron and stone structure, but a living witness of history. The name of this bridge is ‘Nadarai Bridge’. Local people love it with love also call ‘Jhulna Bridge’, and the story behind it is very interesting.

A flood laid the foundation of this bridge

The matter is more than 1885. At that time there used to be a raw bridge on the Ganges here. But in 1871, there was such a severe flood in the Ganges that the bridge was swept away like a straw. The British were in dire need of a strong bridge to maintain their grip on this area and trade.

Then this responsibility was taken up by an English engineer, Delmaple. It is said that he made one day and night to build this bridge. Without any modern machine, only the hard work of laborers and the art of his engineering, he prepared a bridge that stands even after 135 years.

Why do it call it ‘swelling bridge’?

The texture of this bridge is unique. It has been rested on heavy pillars in such a way that when the train passes through it, it has a slight vibration, like a swing. This vibration is not dangerous, but a part of its engineering, which makes it flexible and strong. This is the reason why people started calling it ‘jumping bridge’.

This bridge is a witness to history

Think, what this bridge would not have seen! It saw the rule of the British, saw the freedom struggle and saw independent India being formed and changed. Even today, when the train passes through it, it seems as if someone is telling a story from the pages of history.

The strong flow of the Ganges and how many floods came and went away, but this bridge remained standing. It is still an important link connecting Kasganj to Badaun, Bareilly and other cities. It is not just a bridge, but a precious sign of engineering and heritage of our country.
