A soul-shattering incident that puts humanity to shame has come to light from a nightclub located in a posh area of Guwahati, the capital of Assam. A young woman, who had gone to party late at the weekend, was not only brutally assaulted inside the club premises, but her clothes were pulled, she was dragged by the hair down the stairs to the basement and severely tortured. The security guards and staff present at the spot remained mute spectators even after hearing the screams of the victim; on the contrary, the private security personnel deployed in the name of security have been seriously accused of playing a key role in this heinous act. As soon as the incident gained momentum, there was panic in the local police department and taking immediate action, a total of 7 people including the main accused bouncer and club staff were arrested and sent behind the bars.
According to the official complaint given by the victim to the police, she had come to the club with her friends on a weekend night. During the party, a mild argument broke out with the club staff over some trivial matter. Within no time the dispute escalated so much that the bouncers deployed in security and the club management people lost their temper. It is alleged that lewd and obscene language was first used against the woman, after which several men together attacked her. According to eyewitnesses and the FIR lodged, crossing the limits of brutality, the accused grabbed the woman by her hair, forcibly tried to tear her clothes and dragged her down the stairs to the dark basement area of the club, where she was brutally beaten with kicks and punches.
As soon as information about the incident was received, the local police station reached the spot with its team and rescued the victim in a bleeding and frightened condition. The police immediately sent the girl to the nearest government hospital for first aid and medical examination. After this, the police team took into their custody the digital video recorders (DVR) of all the closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras installed in the club. Based on the footage captured in the CCTV footage and the statements of the victim, the police immediately registered an FIR under relevant non-bailable sections of the Indian Justice Code (BNS). During the overnight raid, seven accused including the club’s chief bouncer, floor manager and other support staff were arrested.
This horrific incident that took place in the major commercial hub of Guwahati has once again raised serious question marks on the safety of women in the pub and nightclub culture of metropolitan and emerging cities. There is tremendous anger among local civil organizations, women safety activists and common people regarding this incident. People say that when the bouncers appointed for security turn from protectors to predators, then how will the common citizens feel safe. Assam State Women’s Commission has also taken suo motu cognizance of this entire episode and has summoned a detailed report from the police administration and has demanded the strictest legal action against the accused.
Top police officials of the city say that anyone playing with law and order will not be spared. Instructions have been given by the Police Commissioner’s Office to hand over the investigation of this entire matter to a special team (SIT). Along with this, an official letter is being sent to the local Municipal Corporation and Excise Department to suspend or cancel the commercial and bar license of the concerned nightclub with immediate effect. The investigation is also examining whether the club was operating illegally beyond the stipulated time limit and whether police verification of the bouncers deployed through private security agencies was done or not.
