News India Live, Digital Desk: Lilavati Hospital Controversy: India’s largest private sector bank, HDFC Bank Managing Director (MD) and CEO (CEO) Shashidhar Jagdishan, are currently in the news due to a major legal dispute. He has been forced to move to the Supreme Court in a case on his behalf. The entire case is related to the prestigious Lilavati Hospital and its trustees in Mumbai.
What is this entire Lilavati Hospital dispute?
The dispute is very complex and tall, related to the management of the Lilavati Hospital Trust and the alleged misuse of funds. The case began a few years ago when a group of trustees (petitioners) alleged that the trust was illegally taking money transactions and mismanagement. He alleged that many of the hospital accounts were illegal and fake and ‘black money’ or irregular transactions were being done through them.
-
Jagadishan’s role and allegations: There is no direct charge against Shashidhar Jagdishan, but he is the responsibility of ‘high monitoring’ of banking operations as a large bank CEO, ‘Know Your Customer’ (KYC) and AML (Anti-Mani Laundering) rules. The petitioners claimed that HDFC Bank violated the rules of dealing with KYC criteria and money laundering in relation to certain accounts, and was held responsible for the inaction of senior officials such as Jagdishan on it.
-
Case in court: The case initially went to the Bombay High Court, where several petitions were heard. Some related cases were also going on in the City Civil and Sessions Court in Mumbai.
-
Role of CBI and Income Tax Department: The petitioners also demanded an inquiry into the case by the CBI (CBI) and the Income Tax Department, alleging that there was a widespread financial fraud.
Why did Shashidhar Jagdishan go to Supreme Court?
It is believed that after mentioning their names or questioning their role in lower courts or High Court processes, Jagadishan has directly approached the Supreme Court to save himself and HDFC Bank. Their purpose of appealing to the Supreme Court may be to dismiss the allegations against him or take the case to a high level, so that the functioning of the bank and their personal image does not come down. The head of the head of a large bank directly reaching the supreme court shows the sensitivity of the case.
The dispute is yet to be seen what will be the impact of HDFC Bank and India’s banking regulatory system.
