News India Live, Digital Desk: There is political earthquake in the neighboring country Nepal these days. The reason is a ban on social media, which made the youth so angry that they took to the streets. This protest increased so much that it became violent, many people lost their lives and amidst this pressure, a minister of the government left his chair.
The case is of the resignation of Agriculture Minister Ramnath Adhikari, who gave up his post, hurt by the government’s decisions and action on the protesters.
After all, what happened that the minister had to resign?
The Nepal government had banned 26 social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp a few days ago. The government argued that these companies have not registered in the country and they were being used for spreading wrong information and online fraud.
But the youth of the country, who are being called “Gen-G” (GEN Z), considered this decision to be an attempt to ‘suppress’ their voice. He said that the government is taking away their freedom to divert attention from real issues like corruption. What was it then, in many big cities of Kathmandu, thousands of students and youth took to the streets. He had placards in his hands, on which it was written – “Stop corruption, not social media”.
This peaceful performance became violent on seeing this. More than 19 people died and hundreds were injured in clashes between police and protesters.
This incident shook the Agriculture Minister Ramnath Adhikari. He said in his resignation that the government which should make a future with the youth of the country, is committing violence on them. He said that to remain in such a government is against his conscience, where the right to perform peaceful demonstrations of the citizens is being crushed in such a way. Prior to the officer, the country’s Home Minister Ramesh writer also resigned by taking moral responsibility of the same violence.
Government had to bow down
In view of the increasing pressure from all around, the resignation of the ministers and the anger of the youth on the streets, the government finally bowed down, after heavy violence and protest, the Nepal government has withdrawn the ban on social media. Information and Communications Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung made this announcement after an emergency meeting.
This incident is not just the story of the resignation of a minister, but it shows that when the youth of a country raise their voice, even the biggest governments are forced to think again on their decision.
